“Val, let’s just talk about this.” Arlo’s voice, a hushed whisper, would drift into the room where Callie’s cell was, sounding worried and irritated. “No. I don’t know why it’s so hard for you to understand that I hate you and I hate your girlfriend. I’m doing this for Landon. That’s it. Let’s just find her and get out of here.”
Callie looked up quickly, her eyes widening. Her voice was raspy as she made yet another attempt to yell. "Arlo? Valerie?!"
There was a pause before Arlo came bursting into the room. “Callie? Callie?” His gaze fell on her and his eyes widened as he reached through the bars to her. “Oh, baby. Oh, sweetheart.”
She took his hands, holding tight. "We.. We have to leave.." Her voice was hoarse, presumably from yelling.
Val entered, looking skeptical, her arms crossed. Even her gaze softened slightly when she saw Callie's state. "Does it look like an actual key?"
Val looked around while Arlo stayed where he was, his eyes frozen on her face. "What... happened to you?"
She looked panicked, and a bit stricken. "There was a man.. She thought I was Valerie and took me.. took me here."
A strange expression crossed his face and he jerked his head towards Val. "So this is your fault!" Val glanced back at him. "What?" "If you hadn't gone poking around, none of this would have ever happened!" "Are you seriously blaming me for your inability to protect your girlfriend?" Val asked flatly. "She's hurt, Val, and it's your fault."
Callie frowned, reaching to place her hand on his jaw. "Arlo, it's not her fault. Don't worry, okay? It'll be alright."
"No! She's been acting awfully this whole time and it was actually her fault!" "I could leave you two here," she said, her voice dangerously soft. "Let you figure out a way out of here."
Callie continued to try and sooth Arlo, her voice gentle. "It's okay, baby. Let's just leave and go home okay? I just want to go home."
"God. It wasn't your fault, Cal. Don't worry okay? Please don't worry." Val rolled her eyes as she approached before unlocking the cell, opening the door.
