She went quiet shortly afterwards, listening to his heartbeat. * * * He flushed, frowning chidingly at her. "What makes you say that?"
She curled up closer to him, relishing his warmth before drifting off as the crickets chirped outside the dark car. * * * "That's not true."
Val woke up cold and muttered under her breath, not opening her eyes and burrowing her face into his neck. * * * "You're a siren who tells beautiful lies."
She kissed his cheek before leaving his side, slipping into the driver's seat and starting the car blearily, reaching into the back seat to pull out a bottle of water. * * "I'm well aware that you plan to kill me and eat me alive."
"Yeah, baby?" she replied, glancing over at him as she tied back her hair. * * * "I agreed to this when I fell in love with you."
He yawned, stretching his arms. "Can I drive yet?" *** She gave him a kiss, his hands cupping his face. "You're lovely."
"No," she replied primly, leaning back as she drank her water. * * * He flushed even deeper, his hands coming to rest on the curve of her waist. "Ahem. I'm fond of you as well."
"Because we still haven't found our destination." * * * He pulled her closer hesitantly, his touch gentle as he considered her. "I love you, Cal. You know that, right?"
“When we find our final place, I promise I’ll let you drive.” *** He nodded slowly, pulling the covers over them. “Good. Good.”
