"Possibly," she said with a frown. "They'd have to be pretty powerful to make all these attacks seem like an accident, though." * * * "So, you guys have cats then?"
"Hm," he murmured. "We're serious about this?" *** Callie nodded. "Two. Nachos and Jelly Bean. I didn't get to name them."
"It's worth investigating," she said, clicking her pen and giving him a rare smile. "It'd make a hell of a story." *** "Are you sure?" he teased. "Maybe you're just embarrassed."
"Good," she said, tearing a page out of her notebook and handing it to him. "Here are some topics I'm going to be researching. If you can think of any pictures you'd like to take that relate to them, feel free." * * * Arlo laughed. It was deep and warm, coming from his chest. "Only one?"
He read through the list. "Alright," he said. "I'll see what I can do." *** Callie smiled slightly. "Only one."
"Thanks," she said. "I'll text you the details about our next meeting if that works for you." * * * "So now the question is which one."
"Good. See you then." She put on her helmet and flipped up her visor, squinting at him. "Do you need a ride?" she asked reluctantly." *** He squinted at her. "They're both pretty embarrassing."
He looked around for a moment, glancing at the snow before speaking hesitantly. "I can, uh.. walk." *** She frowned at him. "That's mean."
"It's not bad," she said, giving him her helmet. "Here. Get on." *** He grinned easily. "It is, isn't it?"
She smirked. "I'm not the one who would get hurt if we crashed." *** He raised his arms in victory. "Ha! You'd think we were soulmates or something."
He squinted at her, but couldn't stop a smile. "What's that supposed to mean?" *** "That'd be weird," she said sarcastically.
"Nothing," she said with mock innocence. "It's just that I have ridden a motorcycle every day for the past five years. You, as previously stated, have never ridden one in your life. If one of us is going to die, it would not be me." *** "Be a hell of a coincidence," he said cheekily.
"I think we have equal chances," he said. "Especially since I have the helmet." *** She smiled, before pausing. "I sometimes wonder what makes people soul mates. It just seems weird."
He nodded quickly. "Yes, please." *** "So technically we were just random strangers picked out for each other for no reason?"
