Is there maybe a way to leave the character limit in place, but make any posts below 10 characters (or whatever set standard) to be subject to moderator review before making the post visible to others?

That would be the golden solution for both sides of this topic. The forum can't be spammed with meaningless posts, and those who don't have more to say won't have to fill up their posts.

And don't talk like posts with less than 10 characters happen that often. This is barely anything to worry about at all.

Considering I am from the internet and so is everyone else, that is the thing, why should anyone be treated differently? everypony equal, everypony loved, they should be respected as much as someone like foxy or anyone else, until they prove otherwise.

And here we are discussing the character limit like it's a big thing or something. It's like one of the smaller annoyances i mentioned in one of my previous threads.

    Here's what we'll do:

Remove the limit, see what happens. Don't like it? Put the limit back if necessary.

Problems solved. Lock this thread. No big deals whatsoever.

What can I say, I'm passionate about our rights as individual people.

I like this idea, just don't overreact when one or two people abuse it because it's something new like we did with the swearing thing. They should have just been taken care of.

Nobody is treated differently. This character limit applies to moderators, administrators, etc.

If you have the compelling need to post something under 10 characters in a constructive thread, you should just go somewhere else. IF you don't care about a subject, you can say 'I don't care.' If you think a subject is funny, you can say 'This is funny.'
It's as simple as typing a 3 word sentence. I don't like the idea of contributing to what seems to be laziness in typing out posts.

The issue is clearly going over your head then. Even though it's not a very important one, it's still one I am willing to discuss.

It is about a persons freedom to have say as they wish, a person like me or anyone else, why deny them this basic human right, have we really devolved that far? it is but only ten characters difference yes, so I ask the same thing to you, it is but only ten characters difference

Ramza's opinion is as clear as daylight. Arguing isn't necessary and it won't get us anywhere. Before this thread continues in mindless bickering, i'd like to see what the rest of the staff thinks.

If by arguing you mean bringing up basic human rights that all should be entitled to, then yes, I have been arguing.

I'm all for removing the character limit if it's only for Forum Games. That's my stance.

And that's perfectly fine, I'd like to hear from Mike and Zephyr though, or at least someone who is speaking for them for once, yeah.

removing it from forum games sounds nice
it is really easy to get around it's not like the small post limit is stopping that many from makeing useless posts if any

I agree that the 10 char limit is annoying on forum games, but a simple /10char at the bottom of your post can bypass the filter. So I'm not too fussed if this doesn't pass.

people are just going to and do bypass it anyway, so what's the problem, that it releases some level of control? if not that, I fail to see what, because that just made all counter points brought up so far mute, IE the one, which I pointed out was really just limiting the site anyway in my original post already.

You just solved your own argument.

There's no problem either way. It's no big deal, it never has been. If this character limit thing is really such a big issue to the community, i'm happy to side with that argument and get rid of this limit. But no matter what decision is made, it's no big deal either way. I respect all opinions, and these opinions on the whole character limit thing are more than valid, but in the end, it's no big deal.

If I was an admin, and i was in charge of making big decisions, i'd just look at this thread and say: "Sure, why not?"

I'd expect anyone with a sense of proffesionalism to say the same. I don't care how this thread turns out, but so far 4 pages of discussing this back and forth is simply idiotic. Something like this shouldn't require so much attention or discussion aside from a simple yes or no.

The only thing I wanna see in this thread from now on is a guy with a red name saying yes or no. That's all this thread ever needed, imo.

First of all, I want to know what's so limiting about such a small character limit. How does it limit your freedoms, and how is not being able to post below 10 characters 'limiting your rights'?

There are plenty of forums out there with 20, 30, even 50 character limits. 10 is insignificant.

The limit is in place to prevent spammy, off-topic posts in constructive threads. That's the very specific, down to the wire reason why we have it, which is also why I'd be willing to agree on getting rid of it for Forum Games.
This isn't my decision to make, but I just don't see why we should have to take away something that will just cause problems later on.

only two pages for me, I changed my viewed post limit per page :3

And being told forcefully no because of reasons that basically amount to 'because I said so', 'that's work I have to do' addresses no points raised and warrants such a response quite frankly. I concur, I was happy to wait, but I do feel obliged to respond to posts made in the thread I posted that are directed at me.

because it's a basic human right to say what we want to say and how we want to say it, so long as we aren't hurting anyone in the process. Members not being able to have a say because it's too short, big whoop none of the important people care right? so suddenly it doesn't matter.

And these are the epitome of ethical standards? these types of things should at least be discussed, I know freedom of speech is not a given on private forums, but quite frankly limiting a person's ability to speak his mind in any fashion that is obviously harmless, just because a few bad apples who would be easily dealt with might cause problems, will never sit well with me.

And yet anyone can bypass this so easily it's not even funny, someone even admitted that they would do this, down to the wire this serves no purpose but to annoy people, or hang over them as some kind of measure of control.

yes because people being able to say what they want to say is a problem, it's nice to know your position on this.

Are my jimmies rustled? not really, just responding to what's asked of me.

My thoughts exactly. However, I really can't see any reason not to just do away with it all together, there are times when a full response just really isn't necessary.

Ok, let me place my thoughts on this because you guys are going in circles.

The point of the character limit is to ensure there is at least some quality to the posts that go into a forum. This helps to prevent asinine posts in the nature of simply saying "This^" and forces the user the to essentially say "I agree with this because..."

Yes, I understand that it can be easily bypassed by simply going /10char.
Yes, I understand that it's not that big of a deal in the first place to simple add a few extra letters.

Both are fair points, but it essentially boils down to an argument similar to a nuh-uh/uh-huh argument. A similar example can be seen in "Well it's not much work, so why don't you do it?", while this can be seen as a good point, it can be easily overturned into "If it's not that much then do it yourself", which effectively makes both sides completely invalid.
I may be getting a bit too far off with this, but you see my point.

So, to get to the point, my view is a relatively simple one, and that's that there are only two solutions to this dilemma:

Keep the character limit the way it is, but establish meaning to it by making posts extended via "/10char" or similar forbidden, sans a few designated forums such as forum games.

Or, ignore the entire thing and carry on as we've done. The post limit is there to enrich posts by making a minimum length. If you want to bypass it by saying "/10char", then by all means feel free. Again, it's not that much work to put in and it does more good than bad.

Of course I'm entirely for uplifting this on forum games either way. It doesn't add to your respective post count either way and I can see how it could get incredibly annoying.

    Edit:

If you want to make posts for simply saying "This^", then we might as well institute some sort of like button, but somehow I don't see that going down all too well considering last time, do you?

I've removed the charlimit from Forum Games.

I personally would prefer character limit remain in other parts as it's relatively standard across many forums. In the end though, I'll live with either. :p

as mike and zephir said. ok, for forum games, yes character limit could be lifted.
for rest of forum, if you want to write down something in style of "lol", but that means you only need to ass 7 more characters, which could simply be keyboard jam if you want, and limit is bypassed. Although, you'll have to agree that for someone that's reading new topic (let's suppose it's something important), it's kinda redundant to scroll over tones of "^this" or "lol" posts until you get to something constructive.
However, long time ago, I suggested we'd have something like "Like" button (and maybe "lol" button), so you can see how much people agree with certain post, without having to scroll trough 10 "^this" posts, but that's topic for new thread.

I think this topic served it's purpose, and to prevent future circles, locking this thread, you can go grab a cider.
