Exactly my thoughts. Hell, there are many celebrated characters like that. Ed from Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Patrick from Spongebob, Ralph Wiggum as you said...Even withing FIM there's Snails, who is much more blatant with the way they flaunt his shortcomings than Derpy...Honestly, and this may be jumping the gun, I think it's because Derpy's female.
In Coming. I love these threads. Is Derpy offensive? No what was offensive, is it the name, the voice or the way she acted. When that clip played in the show I liked it. I didn't like Depy but I thought the clip was funny. Derpy seemed like nothing more then a kindhearted mare that wants to help but she's just clumsy. The name Derpy doesn't sound offensive. One of my favorite LPers uses the name Derp for everything. As for her voice, it's a voice, I have no idea how people could be offended by that. what of snails and screwball, I wonder why no one cares about them. Why aren't they offensive to people. Snails is basically the same as Derpy. I can only assume people find Derpy offensive is because she is a popular fan creation. She is a collective brony OC that some thing Hasbro got wrong. Cause you know, fanon beats canon. I dunno. honestly people should just shut up, it's a cartoon horse. Oh no. The horsey offends me.
Truthfully, everything CAN be offensive. Does that mean we should cater to the every whim of people who find the most inane things offensive? Of course not. But the point of my post was really that political correctness, which some people seem to strive for, is really just a load of old tosh. That's not to say that we should just say offensive things because we can't control ourselves, but if it was not the intention of the offending party to be offensive, then we shouldn't nit-pick them. The words are not more important than the meaning (I draw the line at using racial slurs and words like "gay" or "retard" to offend people, because those are meant to offend people). On the whole, I still side with those who wish that Derpy had remained the way she had originally been. Despite that, I don't care one way or the other about the change. I'm happy with either one. What truly makes me unhappy is the way that some people react to the change like it's the desecration of their holy mantra. There's got to be a happy medium somewhere. In truth, that is what I have been trying to say.
No, people got offended because of something called "Double Standerds", which is usually when it's okay to do something like that with a guy but not a girl {Or sometimes the other way around}. Apparently it's okay to have various Male charectors as either stupid or clumsy {Ed, Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson, Ralph Wiggim, Patrick Star, Snips and Snails, the list goes on and on}, but when it's a girl everybody flips out. That's why soccer moms got so butthurt about it. It has nothing to do with Derpy being "An OC".
Please. Calm down and actually write properly. It gives your point that much more credence. No one is saying those are not OCs. However, those were all less popular, and were made canon much earlier in the show. Basically, the fandom didn't have time to build up a whole fanon as to who they were. They had over a year for Derpy, compared to a dozen weeks for your examples. In a year, one can build up a lot of headcanons as to what a character is like, etc, and when all of those became obsolete and wrong, people got mad. Does that make her an OC? Basically, yes, just as Whooves is an OC. We know he exists in the series, but nothing more. So, we get loads and loads of headcanons to add to the fanon on him. If Hasbro even makes him canon, I think we'll get the same response, because they can't make him live up to expectations for copyright reasons. And fans get piss-drunk mad at people who challange their headcanons, even if it's with actual canon.
What of Screwball and Screw loose. Sure they are different, but would they not be offensive to some people as well. I'm really not sure how some can look at her and get offended, I dunno, maybe it's all the time on the internet. For the record not everyone that was offended was a "soccer mom" Plenty of bronies raged over it as well, not to mention when Hasbro fixed her. Then more people got offended including some that were offended to begin with. How can you try to fix something when the person that was offended will be offended again. Only thing to really do would be to remove the scene. Which would have still offended some, Hasbro/Studio B made a mistake with Derpy, she should have stayed as a fanon creation with nods to her in the show. I wonder how Octavia will go, people have their head canons for her. I wonder if bronies will be able to handle her if she isn't how they imagine. I don't have anything else to say, so have this tank jumping a car.
I would never ever think she is even slightly offensive. She is best pony (I'm gonna be bombed for this).

I found her more offensive when they corrected her eyes and made her a ditzy blonde than when she had derpy eyes and was clumsy. She has depth perception problems obviously with her derp eyes. But when they 'fixed her' and she was just a stupid blonde, I thought that was rude and very cliche. I know of a couple bronies with eye disabilities who found that them 'fixing' her was like they were telling them that disabilities don't exist in the perfect world of Equestria and they needed to be fixed too. I hadn't thought about it like that, but now I totally see what they were saying. Derpy is cute and adorable with her silly personality and googly eyes.
Oh Sweet Celestia, Oh Glob, AWW Can't Stop Crying! [video=youtube;wgNkjv1z6MgITS OK DERPY WE STILL LOVE YOU! *hugs* *we still love you*
I probably said this before, but I think it's offensive to think she's offensive. Still though, the soccer moms and Derpy lovers took it way to seriously.
I want my Derpy back. :'(. I liked her with her 'imperfections'. She showed a more realistic world that not everyone looks 'normal' or what people would consider perfect. I agree with whoever pony that said that fixing Derpy made it not only seem that she was imperfect (which is in some way offensive to a different eyed person who wishes s/he could simply get their eyes fixed, but can't), but it makes Equestria more fiction because it makes a facade that only perfect looking people (or ponies) exist. In the world, there are a lot of different people who look or act different and aren't always accepted because of it. Derpy made Equestria seem more like a real life place, instead of just a fantasy place. I want googly eyed Derpy back!
