Dr. Canner and Equestria's dark ruler

Chapter 1

"Nurse, pass me the defribulator!" I shouted, as I was reviving a fallen pony as we passed along the road.
"Dr. Canner, here!” I grabbed it, and rubbed it with my hooves.
"Clear!" I shocked the patient. Her eyes twinkled a bit before opening. I checked her pulse, it was normal. She seemed confused and sat up, looking at me.
"Who are you? What happened? I have a terrible migraine." The pony inquired.
"I am Dr. Gary Canner." I gladly pronounced, although I was wondering how she did not know me, as I am the most renowned doctor in Canterlot. "My nurse and I were travelling back to Equestrian Aid, when we find you here on the road. I had to shock you to bring you back, you were almost a goner."
"Well, thanks a bunch!" She thanked eagerly." My name is Feather Fields! I was delivering a welcome message to our new Princess, when suddenly a black carriage came in fast and, that’s all I remember." We had a new Princess, Princess Purity; she had just dethroned Prince Shadowmere. During his reign, we were stuck in poverty, and he turned Equestria into a living nightmare. A large group of rebels, including myself, fought in the Battle of Canterlot. I was a battle-medic, and was amazing at it at that! After we drove Shadowmere out, we crowned Princess Purity, the kindest of all alicorns, our majestic leader.
"It's still a mile to Canterlot, and I should examine your condition more, how about we give you a ride to Equestrian Aid, then you can go to the castle." I suggested.
"That would be much appreciated Dr. Canner." She winked. So then, she hopped in the back with me, and we made our way to Canterlot.
When we arrived at the edge of town, we overheard some screaming. We didn't pay much attention to it until we saw a few unicorns run by. "Hey!" I shouted, “What are you fellow unicorns running from?"
Two of them kept running, a blue one stopped and explained, "Shadowmere's army is attacking the castle. It's terrible! Last I saw, they were almost at the throne room!" Then he ran off. Feather and I looked at each other profusely.
"Gary! We must do something!" She exclaimed. "We need to fight them! I have combat experience from the revolution, I can handle it." I was surprised she was in the revolution too, as I would have seen her. I didn't let it get to me, she was right we needed to help, but we needed weapons also.
"Alright! Let’s make a quick stop at Equestrian Aid, I've stored some crossbows there that we can use." I suggested." Nurse, when we get to the hospital, Feather and I are going to help the princess. You stay there, in the cellar."
"Dr. Canner, are you sure? You will need all the help you can get!" The nurse whined.
"I'm sure!" I responded," We have combat experience, and I don't want to risk any lives. Who knows how many are dead already." She was silent after that. I would have comforted her, but I was trying to think of a plan. I was blank. The only thing I knew was I could not let Equestria's newfound prosperity to be annihilated.
Once we arrived, we loaded our crossbows, said our goodbyes, and were off. I barely knew Feather, but for some reason, I trusted her. We hopped back into our carriage and rode down the street in the gloomy, cloudy, night. It was about midnight when we made it to the castle. There were fights going on all around us, but all of Shadowmere's troops were too busy to notice us.
"Gary! I know a secret entrance hidden in the shrubs, there shouldn't be too many guards if we go in that way!" Feather suggested.
"Sounds like a plan, but remember, let's try not to get into a fight, there's only two of us and we are horribly outnumbered." I warned. Once again, I did not know how she knew about this secret entrance. I was too worried to think about those things though, at any second, the princess could be dead. She showed me the entrance, and we snuck in. It was pitch black, with a light at the end of the tunnel. There were two dark-coated guards, armed with axes, watching at the end of the hallway in the light. They didn't see us, as we were in the dark still. I motioned to Feather that we needed to take a shot at the same time. We raised our bows.
"On three," I whispered," one, two, three!” The sound of the hatch releasing was synonymous, seeming as one. Both arrows landed between their eyes and the dropped silently.
"Nice shot!" I congratulated. She just kept moving though, it unphased her, something that came naturally. I followed her green mane, the only thing I could see in the dark.
"The throne room should be right through here." She said, opening a hatch in the ceiling. I climbed up after her, only to be stopped in my tracks at spear point. I clenched my eyes, I thought I was dead. After a moment, I slowly opened up my eyes, and what I saw, was worse than any nightmare I could ever have. Ex-Prince Shadowmere, glaring at me.
"Well, it seems Equestria's finest doctor thought he could prevent me from taking what's rightfully mine!" Shadowmere hissed in his deep, cracked voice. "I was almost worried there, having you teamed up with what was my personal guard!” I was so very confused, looking everywhere; I got a glance of Feather being dragged off. She looked bruised pretty bad. There was no sign of Princess Purity. My heart raced to that.
"What have you done to Prin.." I began to say, but I saw the butt of a spear coming towards me and I was out.
