I don't really care that much about posts counts, so i personally wouldn't care what you do about that. I also came up with another idea that may be less effective, but it could keep the GCT open. I think alot of people use the "New Posts" button to simply browse the new posts and they might only reply to the threads on top of the list that pops up. if we remove the "new posts" button for regular members (but if possible, keep it for staff members so it's still easier for them to do their job), so they'll actually have to browse the entire forum to find new posts. As a result, they might see some older neglected threads they'd be interested in posting in. At the very least i think the main thing to do is find a productive way to make the rest of the forum more appealing for members, and personally i think the GCT is what's getting in the way. That thread is always somewhere on top of the new posts list.
Not always. Then again it might be because it was between 1am and 4am. I like the new posts button. I know how to search if I want to.
Maybe, but it's an expendable addition to the forum. You can just as easily browse the actual forum and see what's new from there. The only difference being you'll be seeing alot more potentially good threads to post in. We should let members explore the forums, instead of just handing out the most popular threads on a silver platter, so to speak.
Trending topics stay on top. I think the issue is with the users not the topics. If people want to ignore the fac fic section they will no matter what. If they don't like the art section they won't go to it. It's all the users fault and forcing them to seek out the rest of the forum by removing the new post button isn't going to help. I don't like the chat, but it's right at the top asking me to click it. I never will though, I hate real time chats and nothing will make me click it.(A few things would make me click it, Tombstone, Tara Strong and Henry Rollins.) That's the only way I'll go there. Back to topic, do I think removing or limiting the GCT is a good idea, no. If you want to make the rest of the forum used, then change the users, but don't force them into the rest of the forum. They won't like it.
If you were to get rid of the new posts button, then how would other members know where you posted? I think that the new posts button is very convienent. If someone was to post in an older thread, it would show up on the new posts page and others could possibly reply to them. I'd say that if you have to, just make posts in the GCT not count. Also, does the RP section count towards post count? I never go there so I'm not sure. But it does seem kind of similar to the forum games (it's for fun/entertainment). So maybe it should take a similar route?
I do agree with both of you to a certain point. Removing things or restricting members isn't a very good or popular way to get things done. But do you guys really care THAT much about the General Chat thread that you don't want to see it locked? Is it really such a big deal? Personally, I can live without it. Why can't anyone else? I joined this forum to see some spread out activity at least. This is just one of the few things i have to do with my spare time, so i like seeing tons of different threads which i may or may not be interested in. What i don't like is coming home from work to see that only the General Chat thread got another 20 pages added to it. I'm only suggesting ways to change that. Nothing more. You're right, i guess. I'm sorry for derailing your thread with this general chat mumbo-jumbo . Mods, if possible, could you please split this thread at the start of page 6 until now? If splitting threads is impossible, i'll make a new thread for this if there's anything left to discuss. Again, sorry for going off-topic like that.
I like the GCT thread Um..........no, People enjoy different things. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it has to be gone. I can live without religion, why can't you or everyone else. ****************************************************** I already said if you want more activity in other places, change the users not the forum. It's the users that make the choice to post in the threads they want. I'm only suggesting my counter points, I see removing things from users to force them into doing something they don't want to do as a dumb idea. It's like removing my right and making me draw with my left. I can do it, but I'm not gonna enjoy any second of it.
The main reason I don't want to see it locked is that many of the poster in the GCT don't want to use the chat. Since the chat is almost always deserted, I just ignore it. I'd be fine if it was to get locked, although I'd either prefer it not to be locked or for the EP chat to have more users. I'm really prefer conversations in larger groups. So before I end up using the chat regularly, there'd have to be many more people in there. If you want, you can temporarily lock the GCT and see if the chat gets more activity.
That's basically forcing people to do something they don't want to do. I don't want to ever use the chat. Locking the GCT and saying "deal with it. go to the chat" that's kinda rude.
Even if you were to lock the GCT, someone would probably make a similar thread later on. If everyone used the chat, it'd be ideal. However, some people just don't like RT chats, so forcing them to use it would be wrong. I'd say stop post counts in the GCT and see if anyone is actually bothered by it.
One thing is for certain. If you're afraid that locking or deleting the GCT will reduce activity, or make members dislike this website because they feel forced, then EPR has a bad future ahead of it. Closing one thread shouldn't be causing this much strife... That's the last i'll say about it here.
And now we're back to the topic of post counts. Lets just go 4 chan style. No names, no fun, no friendship, all a waste of time. It causes issues when it's the main thread used. I wish I had a time machine, back to September I'd go.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. People should have the choice of whether they post or use the chat up top. And I'd much rather see people getting stuff off of their minds in a single thread rather than making multiple threads that aren't necessary.
I'm looking at the current topic of the GCT (Pokemon). I know for a fact that many members on this forum enjoy the games. However, if I was to make a thread about it, it's likely that not many people would end up posting. Even a large topic like that would die out within a few days. It shouldn't be the case but, unfortunately, it is.
Why make a thread just for it then. It would be buried in like 6 hours anyway. Change the users not the forum. I'm serious, it's the members fault, the forum. I posted a thread for a fan fic a long time ago. I got responses from only 2 people. If I put it in GCT, it might have lasted about 2 pages. Basically the same thing. If people really cared about what idea I had they would have gone and posted. If they cared in the GCT, I might have made a thread for it.
Please move the GCT discussion here guys: http://www.everypony.com/forums/sho...asing-forum-wide-activity&p=219181#post219181 As far as i'm concerned, moderators can delete these last few pages if they deem it neccesary. Again, i apologize for causing this discussion in the wrong thread.
I guess the original topic of this thread should be brought back into discussion. So... what do you guys think of the whole community forums thing?
I'll say one thing about the community thing idea. People just don't care. My view and I fully support it.
