I still watch episodes of Ed, Edd, n Eddy. Granted, that was geared for an older audience (with a lot of content for an even older audience than that).
Girl: "Oh cool, an awesome ending for Season 2 Episode 2." Boy: "OMGWTFBBQ Star Wars Reference!" Man: "MLP is SO AWESOME "
>implying this show doesn't get quite a bit of stuff "past the radar" >see: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Radar/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic EDIT: I must be all three, because a combination of those three reactions was mine.
Oh, WOW! I knew about 1/3rd of those, mostly the visual ones, but that's hilarious. I'm really hoping to get some kind of DVD copy of season 1 at some point.
Some people just can't be reasoned with. People, like those Fox b*******, are blinded by getting good stories and the money they get for it. If they can make it look good, despite it being the truth or not, they'll say anything. And people who actually believe that are just as bad. Fox says Bronies are pedos? Not true Fox says Bronies are unemployed because they want to watch a little girls show? Not true If a NEWS NETWORK doesn't want to bother getting their facts straight for the sake of sensation, then put them out of their g****** job! I simply can't stand arrogance like that! Sorry, i tend to go overboard on stuff like this sometimes... <_<
Some of you guys are not being really honest. I find it hard to believe that many of you wouldn't also think that it would be unusual for adult men to like this show had it not been wrapped up in a giant internet-trendy meme. Now, going as far to say as that people who did like the shoe were pedophiles, probably not, but the position of skepticism on the part of a viewer's mental/emotional state would be justifiably reasonable if you didn't know any better about the show. But of course, kind of like the gay community, I bet there are many among us who don't even like the show that much but hang around here because we kind of just accept anypony, regardless if they are kind of offputting or not. If you're a loser and have nobody to relate to and find others your age frustrating and exclusive, saying you like ponies to get a whole bunch of new friends is a good ticket. That all being said, it is a difficult task to explain this show to people. I think the easiest way is to just man up and say something like, "The plot is more compelling than you realize at first glance, the animations are exciting, the characters are compelling, the music is fun, and this makes it an entertaining show." If the person you are talking to happens to like an insidiously stupid television show, you can just drop in, "besides, you watch Jersey Shore/Covert Affairs/Jackass/Tyra, which is a hell of a lot more ridiculous."
Seeing as I've typically been on the end of skepticism from people in general I guess I just don't really care enough to make other people liking something like ponies my problem. I mean, Yo Gabbo Gabba is aimed at an even younger audience and it's had an adult following for a while now(can't particularly see why though, I find the music pretty annoying) that no one's complaining about.
First of all: I had no idea the show was even popular when I first started seeing fanworks of it and thought to myself "well, it can't be that bad". THEN I found a few of the brony sites and realized it was popular. But even if it wasn't I still would have watched it. I don't know about anypony else, but a fictional work's popularity usually doesn't factor into me deciding whether or not to try it. Second of all: wat. While I do agree there are people who would pretend to like this show to "fit in", I'm pretty sure the vast majority of members in this forum are legitimately fans of this show. :| I agree 100% with the last paragraph, though.
Sure, but an individual case is anecdotal to my point though, right? It's not like "oh gee wiz, this one person does not fit the description of people I am talking about, so everything I said must be false." I mean, I watched the show on television and further scoured the internet about it, but I don't think it would have held my interest so keenly if it hadn't been for the wealth of fan created media. Again, anecdotal, but for a majority of people, popularity is demonstrably a huge pressure for liking something or not regardless of its quality. For teenage girls, this is pop music. For many internet loners, this is MLP:FiM. If you say so. From what I see, a lot of people just seem to take advantage of the friendly nature of the community to unwind a bunch of pent up insecurities, depressions, and frustrations upon the membership. Someone may then say, "Well, Mane, that's because we're so friendly and like finds like blah blah blah and they haven't had a place to do this before," to which I would say, "you're looking for the same thing," because I wouldn't be friends with someone who fishes strangers with emotional instability. Maybe that's because I'm an overly rational prick who is a bit more self-aware, or maybe that's because I'm not a phony person. I'm glad you do, because it is a way of rationally explaining real interests of the show instead of some vague, unrelated, gooey appeal to emotion and gender identity.
MLP is far more compelling than Jersey Shore will ever be. I hate reality TV. (On a side note, I watch Covert Affairs.)
