I was ambivalent about Will and Grace, I didn't see what the hype was about. I had friends that were really into it, but I could never get into it like them, however, I'd watch it if there was nothing else on. I just wish that television and movies relied on tropes less and tried to attempt some originality. Of all the character, Jack and Karen were my favorites, even though I dislike stereotypes. - - Auto Merge - - You're going to find these sort of people in every fandom. I had someone the other day call me sick for telling a fellow Trekkie I was attracted to Data. *shrug* I just try and remember though, I can't force my sexuality on others, and there's always going to be people who are uncomfortable with my level comfort of sexual expression. I wont condemn them for it as I don't want them to feel uncomfortable, I try and ignore them. Sexuality is a major part of many fandoms so I was a bit surprised that hadn't met a Data fancier before me. I think many people get obsessed with shows because it fills a void. I know that when I'm having a bout of chronic depression or just feeling stressed dealing with people, I become obsessed with fandom to escape. I'm sure many other people do the same thing.
Well, I never really put much interest in the show and thus never sat through more than two episodes tops, so I'll have to take your word for it that the show downplayed Jack's 'outrageous' personality. Most gay men I've met in person are usually classy and reserved, like Will, or surprisingly full of testosterone (to the point where they could probably pass for Hell's Angels). I've only ever met one stereotypically flamboyant one - a friend of my sister - and, well, he got on my nerves big time.
Yeah, the problem with that is that Will was played by a STRAIGHT actor because the gay actors who auditioned "weren't gay enough". Let that sink in for a minute. On topic, Star Wars, Star Wars, STAR WARS!!!!! The stupidity of prequel haters gives me a migraine. Were they as good as they original trilogy? No. Are they still good movies in their own right? Yes. It got so bad that pretty much the entire reason Lucas sold his company to Disney is because he wants to make more Star Wars movies, but he doesn't want to deal with idiot fanboys complaining about everything. Disney tends to ignore those people, so now he'll be able to be involved with the new films while being out of the line of fire. He gets to have his cake and eat it too. Well played, Mr. Lucas, well played. Also, comic book fans. Every, I say, EVERY time a new movie comes out, it's impossible to talk about it sensibly because all people do is nitpick and they can't simply enjoy the films for what they are. For example, the Green Lantern movie is just like every Green Lantern comic I ever read, so I would say it was a good adaptation of the source material, but to hear comic book geeks talk about it, you'd think it was the worst film ever made. Then, when a movie comes out that actually IS objectively terrible and an extremely poor adaptation of the comics (like The Amazing Spider Man), it gets tons of praise and they say that that's what they wanted all along. Head, meet desk.
I don't think I could really leave a fan base because someone said something nasty about it. I get a lot of heat from all sorts of people for being a brony l, and I am always going to be die hard. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but so many people abuse that privilege by getting nasty about it and those are the people that dont deserve the privilege, but just because people abuse a privilege that they don't deserve doesn't change my view on anything but that person. Every fanbase has it's own assortment of various childish or otherwise immature people. If you're asking if there are any fanbases that exist purely of those kinds of people, i seriously doubt it.
fans of "Danny Brown" the rapper are almost exclusively obnoxious elitists who tear you apart if you have a different opinion than them. I'm sure there are sane fans of him out there, but from what I've experienced, he has the worst kind of fan base, the "if you don't like it you are too stupid to get it" kind. I cannot over-emphasize how obnoxious Danny Brown fans are (from what I've seen)
