He looked unsure for a moment. "Surprise me?" *** She looked around, rubbing her wrist, which hurt slightly. "I'm pretty good. How about you?"
She laughed, opening the door. "Will do." * * * "I just saved a girl from the train tracks. I'm feeling great."
Gwen opened the door, her blonde hair already pulled back into a ponytail. She had a bag slipped over her shoulder and she closed the door behind her, looking around. "Snakey?" * * * "Well, I figured you were going to town," he teased, raising an eyebrow. "I think we're all heading in. I guess I was more curious about what you were up to."
He hung up the apron, returning to the main room. "I'm here!" *** She laughed slightly, shaking her head. "I was going to the top of some buildings or just walk around."
She gave him a small smile. She didn't seem very comfortable with him yet, but she pulled out a styrofoam container from a linen bag. "Pad thai?" * * * "I see. So, getting smooshed wasn't part of the plan?"
She nodded, glancing back down at the bag. "Of course. They gave me french fries for free too. It was a little weird." * * * "What a hero. You don't plan for random train squashings."
He laughed slightly. "French fries? At least they were free." *** "Nope. Not usually. How about you? Are you going to work?"
"Yeah, it was a weird addition," she said with a small nod. "Are you a ranch or a ketchup guy?" * * * "No, I was going to..." He hesitated, looking a little uncertain. "I guess... I don't know. Would you like to see?"
She squinted, pursing her lips as she offered him the container of fries. "I prefer ranch." * * * He nodded and the train beeped as the doors began to close. He frowned and grabbed her hand, tugging her onto the train.
"Maybe not," she allowed, leaning against the wall as she opened her own pad thai. "But I would expect more from you." * * * The doors slid behind them and he turned to her. "That would have been embarrassing."
He chuckled, setting the food on the counter and opening it. "Fair enough." *** She looked back momentarily before turning her gaze to him. "It would have."
The smell of pad thai hit him immediately. "Don't eat too much of this stuff," Gwen warned. "This is the best pad thai in New York, but it's really heavy if you're about to go kick some ass." * * * He dropped her hand, sitting down. "You can't miss a train after getting squashed."
