Hmm... So if I posted this guy, would any of you know who he is? Hint: The american Santa Claus evolved from him.
And correct. Every year on the 31th of December he visits Holland with his army of "Zwarte Pieten" minions, to bring presents to all the nice children. But if you've been naughty they'll abduct you to Spain. So you see, the Dutch had a santa figure before it was cool. But what's more; In olden times, before this 'Sinterklaas' celebration was initiated by the Christians, there was an annual pagan celebration in Wodan's honor. The Christians didn't want to completely root this tradition out, so instead they 'Christianualized' it instead. Wodan became St. Nicholas, his two raven became the "Zwarte Pieten", his spear became a staff etc. And so the American Santa essentially derives from a pagan deity. The more you know. \^_^/
I thought everyone knew that already lol. It's a similar story with Easter, where the holiday's name comes from the pagan goddess Ēostre, goddess of fertility. It was originally a spring festival till the Catholic Church took over.
Represents the fact that the idea of Christmas was derived from several different cultures. Mainly Northern European. Which coincides with what Twinkle and Keldeo were talking about. It also debunks the fact that non-christians shouldn't be able to celebrate christmas.
Yeah, I remember this discussion and that exact picture coming up in the holidays thread a few months back. It made me happy because knowledge needs to be shared. In other news, depression can go choke on a hot egg roll.
