I'm specialist of computer science with a focus on systems development. I write operating systems as my career choice. Hell, I write kernels in my spare time. BIOS calls are easy, after you have a multitasking setup and scheduler as they require you to drop back to 16-bit real mode (or enter virtual 8086 mode, which is exclusive to 32-bit CPUs), and all of that assumes you're writing for i386 compatible instruction sets. As a side note, BIOS calls are more painful for 64-bit CPUs as you have to drop to 32-bit protected mode before entering 16-bit real mode (there is no virtual 8086 in long mode), make the BIOS call, reenter 32-bit protected mode and finally make the jump to 64-bit long mode (which notably has very large overhead); this is why EFI is great, since the code entry points are 64-bit as opposed to 16-bit, thus require no long mode switching process and far less overhead as a result. Working with most hardware is fairly easy as well - assuming everything is well documented, and said documents are freely available - with the few exceptions of working with VGA and other video-out hardware, ATA (and ATAPI), and PCI.
A lot of things can be considered wrong. Like having a desire to buy a military grade sniper rifles and hunt poachers in africa.
A blade is great, if you have the guts to actually use it. Pulling a trigger gives allows a person to have a sense of detachment. They're not shooting a person, they're just hitting a target. When you cut someone with a knife, you feel the resistance as the blade enters their flesh. You see the pain and fear in their eyes, and you hear it in their voice. You feel their blood as it leaves their body and flows onto your hand. Stabbing another human being is not something that you forget, and it takes a certain kind of person to not be horrified by it.
