There are more things to discover of course. However I do see your point though and I agree mankind has really hit the plateu of artistic ideas.
I guess you're right, I don't really keep up with what's going on in the gaming world like I used to, so the only games I tend to come across are titles from big names. Maybe better technically but not creatively. I couldn't care less about sound quality, graphics, physics etc. It means nothing if I feel like I'm playing the same game over and over again. And where did we get this idea that photo realism is king? How about making a game with an interesting art style for once? I know it's just catering to the masses but it really frustrates me when the game treats me like a child incapable of thinking for myself, the player just seems to be told everything, how things work, what to do, where to go, what this does etc. I'm sure there would be some fantastic indie games that cater exactly to what I want, but honestly, I don't want to have to spend the time searching for them. True, but then, you don't need to necessarily be original to be interesting and intriguing.
The only visual thing i care about is physics. I play HL source..with its 90's graphics. And they dont bother me. Graphics are nice but id rather have story and gameplay.
Have you by chance seen egoraptor's Sequelitis series? He says almost the exact same thing in his Mega Man vs. Mega Man X video. Lots of cursing inbound. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FpigqfcvlM
Your added elements would not be the same in every situation. A great game can surround gamplay, but others can surround story with little gameplay, like the MGS series. Music, I personally don't care about, especially for games surrounding gameplay, because I just chuck on my metal and headbang away. Physics wouldn't come into play at all in some situations, granted in games like Bulletstorm or Battlefield or something such things would be really relevant concerning realism, but a game like Diablo doesn't need much attention to Physics. Graphics, I couldn't care less, but I do like to have max graphics on When Realism comes into play, Sound can be really important. But I would agree to that in most respects.
Sure have, and I agree with him 100% And this is just a pet peeve, but where did this regenerative health crap come from? If I've been shot, then I've been shot, I'll lose health and probably have some sort of injury that will affect me from then on. Did I miss the meeting where it was decided that humans are now super creatures that can heal any wound by waiting
Actually graphics can really add to the story. They can add small details on the walls, in the gutters, in the dining rooms of houses and on the counters of businesses. All made possible exclusively by better graphics, and the more powerful hardware that can render so many objects in such fine detail that really add to a story. For example the Portal series managed to tell a couple of pretty great tales, and they did so without hardly any dialogue or awkward exposition. They told their stories through a series of carefully placed props, compelling tableaus, graffitied walls, dated office decor, fake product posters and some notes left behind by the long-gone workers.
What do any of those thing have to do with story?"Look at how realistic that wall texture is"Doesnt add anything. A box with low resolution textures adds as much as a high res box.
sorry I edited it with an example. A really great way to tell a story is the world. If developers of games take the time the world itself can telmany interesting stories all without a single word of diolauge. lol I cant argue with that. its rare... but it can happin im just trying to say with effort games could be better then ever before better then any medium before even.
True..but you can easily paint a picture of the world with low-med res textures. For example COD(Yes im using it)Had uber realistic graphics...but that did nothing to the story.(AKA SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT GRENADE SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT) Since Art and originality are dead...why dont we bring it back?
That would be a very blan world, for example skyrim does a fine job with what im trying to explain, they gave their world all these small details. some details that can't be renderd on lower quality hardware.
I'm planning to create some small games over the next few years with a more artistic style. Just small things, like what you can get for phones, tower defence and such.
Im planning on making source mods like that. Original..artistic..and very bizarre. But fun. Wait.... "Bizarre butt fun?!" What have i done!?
Since we're on the subject of games, I'm getting excited about upcoming games made by bronies, especially Legends of Equestria.
