I think he would make a good Element of Love. It's clear that he loves Twilight as an older sister, he wanted to spend time with the other ponies during the Gala, and he has a crush on Rarity. That's my opinion anyway... Yes, he does need a sword...
After all the suggestions, I think Love makes the most sense. In addition to your points, he gives a lot more love than he receives. Like you said, he loves Twilight like an older sister, maybe like she was his mother. And despite the fact she takes him for granted, that love never changes. His crush on Rarity is another big factor. I'm not saying that Spike is definitely in love with Rarity, but he's definitely pushing it. I think when he faces Nightmare Moon, all the love he has from the other Elements will make him stronger and stronger, and will be able to strike NMM to take down her dark barrier. She could even say "Drat! I've been foiled by the power of love!" lol
At first I was thinking element of humility, but then I saw chocolatechip's proposal for element of sacrifice, and it seems perfect to me. Spike is willing to sacrifice anything for his friends especially Rarity. He seems very noble, loving, and faithful in this. I think I may actually become a Spike fan because of this realization.
The element of love, like twinkledust said =/ i mean, hes...i shouldnt say in love with rarity as much as, has a crush on her XD i once dreamed that he was a teen and she fell for him XD maybe, to prove hes the 7th element of love, he has to save her? o.o but other than that, he does love twilight (as a friend/caretaker) and helps her out a lot, and always seems to be with her! c:
Fortitude would still work. How else can he remain so happy through all his sacrifices? Another possibility would be amity, which means friendship. I suppose we could also just say friendship. It makes perfect sense though, in a simplistic way. The show is called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and Twilight represents the element of magic.
I'd say this is best choice yet. His love toward Twilight as big sister, even if Twilight might been using him any book boy shows that he does it from love. Also in episode Feeling Pinkie Keen, he shows that he also cares for Fluttershy when we was very worried for her well being, as well as he loves all pony gang. There's also his crush on Rarity that we can't forget. I think Element of Love would fit quite right in whole MLP:FiM concept, and Spike's character.
Ok guys. I've thought about it, and giving Spike the 7th Element IS a very stupid idea. HOWEVA, I think I've thought of something better! Spike could be a decent of a legendary dragon warrior. He has to train with a legendary warrior trainer, find the Sword of Dragons, and to fulfill his destiny by joining up with the Elements of Harmony to take down the NMM incarnation. I think Spike should still get a necklace or something of a green flame, but with a different design than the Elements' necklaces. Spike would be able to slash his way through NMM's protective dark void barrier and with his power combined with the Friendship Rainbow Beam, they would destroy Nightmare Moon forever! Better?
Yeah, I've always thought that she depended on Spike as little TOO much. At the same time, I think Spike feels Twilight is a part of him, and same goes for Twilight. She just too caught up in her studies to admit it.

i know this is out of place but what about darkness? with all the things spike had gone through. along with the episode when he turned greedy. also everyone has secrets even those who are honest. whats light without darkness?
