I know that my brother would laugh his smug-*** face off. He's the kind of guy who hangs with the "cool crowd". I honestly think that he's been heavily influenced by them, so he likes what they like. My Dad would be very confused, but he's all the way in Iraq, so I don't have to worry about him. I don't know how my mom would take it....so I'll just leave her be. I'm just hoping to meet some bronies when I start college.
Oh the reaction would be bad...nothing is as funny as making fun of me. There was this really sad father-daughter song that used to play on the radio ALL THE TIME and it happened to come out around the same time my dad was getting ready to leave for Iraq. I'm a huge daddies girl so needless to say I cried just about every time I heard it especially as his deployment date got closer. My sister however found this hilarious and sang it with a smile on her face every time I was in earshot. My mom would even laugh at that, there was no end of comedy in it for them. I pretty much hide my emotions about well, anything now. Anything my family can find to emotionally torture me with is hidden, it's really separated me from them. So yeah the equation looks a lot like this: me+ponies+my family=imminent disaster
Well, after reading how hard some of you have it, and really thinking about my family and friends, I've hit my personal realization. I don't have it that bad, because I would be teased, and not lose almost a single friend or family member. (Father being an exception... He must -never- know... ; ) Erm... Anyway, it turned out to be me. I would be teased, but not lose their friendship. I would be embarrassed, and have to get over it.. It's really a sad statement about people in general that this kind of thing comes up at all, isn't it? Hooray internet for making everypony able to be themselves at least some of the time.. It's not a perfect system, but it's better than nothing.
I just had a an interesting opportunity that I'm not sure if I made the right decision. My lecturer asked the class "Is there a TV show you are addicted too". He went around the class and people gave pretty ordinary responses, one girl admitted to to liking a kids show called Tribes. Then some of my non brony friends who know about my bronyism, were nudging me and I just said, I'm not saying it dude no way. So I didn't. But boy am I curious what would have happened if I had, I really have a good vibe about the class group I'm with, that they won't care, but I've read people wrong before. They are all pretty nerdy and most over 20 so.... did I make the right decision? In fact there is more to this story that I think it deserves it's own thread.
Well, what more is there to say? Pretty everbody but my parents know I liek ponies. It would be quite awkward with said parents, so I try to hide it, but I use speakers so i'm sure they know. In either case, they usually don't try to see what I do on the web, so no problem. As for the family torturing you, in your place I would probably just punch the offending party (unless it's my mother/father) and tell them to stop. Repeat as necessarry. Worked every time so far =/
Lol after a few times of asking to stop I resorted to a swift kick in the behind (I play soccer, kicking is a much more effective act of violence, I punch like a girl). Well after that I was the one who got all the heat. Really it's just better to keep to myself around here. I'm saving my money and someday, when I'm financially secure, I will be able to get my own place.
Until I get out of school, and I go off to college, there is no way I would tell anyone. I...I would never hear the end of it. It could even make me hate ponies, and thats a nightmare on its own.
Well, for anyone not too sure about how others would take it, (or believe others would respond negatively) heres my very brief experience; Firstly, i should probably share a littlle about myself to paint a better picture of why you might expect people would act negatively or confused to me being a Brony - I'm a 26 (almost 27 - argh!) year old guy, work full time as a supervisor responsible for all collegues who work the front end/checkouts (as well as all our thousands of customers each day) in a busy supermarket ASDA (thats Walmart for you folks in the USA). My best friends are the kind of guys who hit the gym every day before work, and spend their free time round my place on set days of the week to indulge in large quantities of alcohol (usually resulting in us all speaking in Arnold Schwarzennegger voices/quotes), playing videogames (Call of Duty usually, or any other competetive violent First person Shooter title) and we all have shaved heads... not exactly the image one would picture if they were to imagine a MLP fan, right? So i'm sitting in my games room the other day watching the first episode of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' (since i'd seen so many people recommending it online) when my Fiancee walks in. "What are you watching?" she asks. Me, not being the kinda person who really gets embarrased about stuff was like "My Little Pony - It's quite good!" At this point i was expecting either a raised eyebrow, or at the very least for her to walking away laughing like "Oook.. i'll leave you to it" but no, (and i promise this is 100% true) her responce was;; "Oh cool! I used to love the old series when i was little! Is this new? Can i watch it with ya??" I was like "Sure!" ...and we both grabbed a Coke from the fridge and enjoyed the first episode togeather. Now, my friends, i have no doubt what so ever would have a good laugh with a "wtf man??" if they were to see me watching it...but then, the four of us make it our JOB to ridicule and take the mick out of each other at every possible opportunity whenever we can; for example, im quite an otaku/geek at heart, and love my anime, world cinema, sci-fi, classic horror etc, and for all me and my friends share very similar tastes in movies, games and social life etc...they're really not into any of that and don't get it (and LOVE to mock)...in the same way when two of em are going on about cars, and talking about stuff they wanna do to upgrade em, i'll be all mocking like "Oh yeah! Million Revs!! *insert suggestive hand gesture/action here* - but it's all done in good fun! That's wat friends do! But let me tell you something interesting; the same people, since i showed em that edited MLP:FIM Call of Duty paraody video on facebook, whenever we're on Voicechat in game, they now refer to people who charge in aimlessly, or to the losing team (or each other) as 'Buffalo' XD like "You having a Buffalo moment there lad?" "Pfft? YOU'RE the buffalo man, look at your kill/death ratio! We all know who the real Pony is here and the score proves it!" So ya, they dont even watch the show, and they're referencing it in a very burley and testosterone filled game! The point i'm trying to make wwitth all this; BE YOURSELF - don't care what anyone is gonna say - sure, you'll get those that will make fun of ya (although with REAL friends, that should be good fun in itself and ya should give as much as ya get, LOL) and there might even be those who will purposly go as far as to question your sexuality to try and get the desired responce from you. But just be you, be relaxed, show em that you think its awesome no matter what they think, and i GARUNTEE you'll feel 20% cooler! (and who knows, you might even convert some new Bronies along the way!) ^_~
In all honesty, I feel somewhat ashamed for liking it because it seems my good friends know me best for being a master troll on deviantART... which may make my love of MLP to them tragically ironic to them, seeing as trolls bash bronies all the time...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hoUIu2HNno&feature=player_embedded (LOL, ive been waiting for an excuse to use this somewhere!) XD
I agree with, and share his concerns with this man. I occasionally say that something needs to be about 20% cooler, and I got a few looks around occasionally, most of them curious, and I knew from a couple of looks that some people were bronies. I assume they are in the smae position I am. I simply refuse to reveal my bronyness to high school; one, I'd be the laughing stock of the entire school. Second, I wouldn't even get a chance to explain. Most people just assume that you're gay and get over it.
I've gotten probably a couple honks from bronies maybe when I drive because of a "At least 20% Cooler" Image I printed and put it right on my rear window. That and if I ever hear someone say quote or something from MLP:FiM, I've got to brohoof them. Only thing I'd be showing off would be merch but that's pretty much it.
