I've also been on a forum with "clans" like you call them. It helps to spread the activity a little, but such a system is only truly effective on HUGE forums. Not so much on smaller communities.
As for the serious discussion board, it's been suggested and disapproved around here many times. :derpe:

Sure thats what forums are, but who says it has to be that, if something works why not let it thrive. It's evolution.

Some do not like chatboxes, there is no reason not to have a small section for chat threads.

We do have similar goals, we agree GCT does have a lot of unnecessary traffic. I would like it to stay because it is fun, but it needs to be "fixed".

sure it is, everyone deserves to enjoy it here.

I don't really think that clans are needed. This is quite a small, friendly community. In most places, the atmosphere is laid-back anyway.

As for the whole GCT thing, I think that a whole sub-forum should be created for the chat threads. It could be placed in the Sugarcube Corner Forum, as that seems like the most suitable place for it. Within this sub-forum, you have the different topics of chat (School, How was your day, Quick Conversations, etc.). I know this has all been said before but I decided to start to put it all together.

Yeah, and I think the real deal is that people just need a place to chill every once and a while.

Well, one thing is for sure. The GCT is incredibly popular, incredibly busy, and incredibly chaotic. It's practically lawless.

And what's the best solution to a lawless place? Add rules and make sure they're followed.

For a thread that's updated every hour at least, we'd need some serious moderator activity in just that thread. So if people really want to keep the General Chat thread, here's what we can do to fix it:

    1)Lock the old GCT

    2) Make a new GCT with the following details in mind

    Add rules:
Members should be told what they are, and what they are not allowed to post in the General Chat Thread. Topics with a specific nature such as movies, games, sports etc. anything that fits in an existing section, should be deleted and members should be notified of that section's existence. Topics of a more specific general nature, should also be moved to the actual general discussion section in a seperate thread. Keep the General Chat Thread to simplistic discussions only.

    Add staff members if necessary:
Maybe just a handful of specific GCT moderators, to ensure the rules of that thread are followed, and take action when needed.

If we can do that, and keep that up, i'd be more than happy to see the (new) GCT stay open. If they are reminded of other sections while posting in the GCT, members will eventually learn to post in those actual sections right away.

Anyway, i've been discussing this all day, i'm tired, i'm off to bed now. :derpe:

I'll see how this unfolds in the morning, but to be honest, i think everything i mentioned in this post here is the best and most reasonable thing we can do to keep everyone happy. I hope you can all agree.

I agree with this. It's kind of like how we have an RP section and an RP chat (kind of). Some like to chat real-time whilst others like to do it forum-style. I think the main reason why people stay on EP is either the RPs or because of the community. And the General Chat Thread seems to be the hub of the community. If it really is the center of our community, it should be split up and more organised.

The fact that you said the bit in bold suggests you knew we wouldn't be happy about you posting this, I've said it before, I'll say it again: If you have problems with the staff - fine - but contact us or them in private. Please. Calling people out or voicing opinions like that is FINE, neigh, it's encouraged - but try not to do it in public places where it'll just cause unnecessary drama.

As for the GCT you all have some excellent points and very realistic suggestions, but I'm not sure anything in-particular is jumping out at me.
Would it help if I put the GCT thread in it's very own forum? So it doesn't bury everything else (in terms of 'Latest Post -> In)/forum index list? Nothing else would be changed.

    Hold that thought Grey.

Something that has confused me since I joined was....

....why these two forums are all the way down in Carousel Boutique? I spent like 10 minutes trying to find forums like these.

One of the first things a person sees when they come here is General Discussion. They are much more likely to jump in there if its the first thing they see. Perhaps we move these two up to sugarcube corner? They seem out of place.

    Not only that but...

....it has five different subforums? Surely we don't need it divided up that much. Especially on a site this size.

This may very well be relevant to the fix.

While it would be a start, it wouldn't change much. Eventually, I think a "Chat" sub-forum should be added, with the different topics. That way things are more likely to stay on topic and be useful.

Either that or the GCT get lots of new rules and lots of new mods to help it run properly. Which ever is more effective.

Come to think of it, we have Fanfic and RP mods, why can't we have Chat mods for the forums?

This topic's been dragging on for a while, and I still can't see any conclusion in sight.

It's a discussion. Not an argument.

If you don't want to see it, don't post.

Negative soldier. That created more problems than it was worth. Try a 'what pleases you' thread.

    Too late :3
I guess I could also do that.
    Give me a minute.

    Edit:

There. I have made 2 new threads.
    -what annoys you
    -what pleases you

    That should make everyone happy.
    Okay?
