I'm going to go out on a limb here. What if humans realized they were wrecking the planet and left? They probably tore down the cities, but some traces were bound to be missed. Hence the tires and such. And genetic expirements at that time would have been incredibly advanced, allowing for the modification and creation of new species. If we decided that the best stewards of the planet would be herbivores, than a pony is the best way to go. Large enough to hold its own, strong herd mentality, already domesticated and bred for ideal traits. A civilization that advanced could in fact bestow intelligence on a pony, and after a few thousand years of evolution, predators could have largely died off, a rudimentary civilization would be in place, and the cooperative, calm nature of the ponies could eliminate the need for conflict, crime, expansion, and other ills that plague us today. With one or two hyper intelligent ponies (such as the Princesses) in charge, the direction of the planet could be quietly directed with a few nudges here and there. Think about it! Climate control, telekineses, and expanded intelligence are all fringe sciences in development today. Modify some for wings, horns, psychic powers, and all of the traits exhibited today in Equestria. It's all making sense! See the reality! We created a utopia on earth, at long last! It just required another species to take the helm. I've probably overanalyzed this, haven't I?

GM ponies would be easier, I think. I could get into details, but you obviously have Internet access if you want to look into it, and to be honest the procedures that a horse/pony would have to endure to gain increased intelligence veer pretty far into the Land of Squick and Horror. If I recall, a shot of the planet we get shows similar continental structure to earth as well, but we also would have to account for terraforming that might have been done, as well as some continental drift.
Taking into account the shifting of the continents, i think its fair to say that this has occurred over the span of hundreds of thousands of years. And if that is the case, wouldnt it be more feasible that Ponies are mutated forms of what lives on the planet now, as opposed to human-altered versions?
See, I don't think it was that long ago. A globe in Cheerilee's classroom has a continent on it that bears strong resemblance to Africa. It's altered a bit, but still recognizable. The fact is, we have no reliable timeline to chart it's history on. The current events seem to start 1000 years ago, and not before. We have no reliable evidence, so your guess is as good as mine. I'm just throwing science at the problem until it sticks.
Or, another theory, a great calamity befalls the human race. Be it from disease, natural disasters, or man-made ones, the human race, along with most large mammals on earth, is wiped out, leaving the Earth in the same state as it was billions of years ago. And this earth developed in the same way that our did, but instead of apes evolving into the human race, ponies evolve into what is portrayed in the show. As do I :derpe: I also love how this thread has gone from a discussion on Iron Will to analyzing the possible creation of Equestria.
Actually, while humans don't exist other primates have been shown as existing (among Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake's stuffed animals at the beginning of A Friend Indeed is a monkey) maybe in Equestria a Minotaur has the head of a bull and the body of a gorilla *shrugs* I mean they de-humanized the manticore for the Pilot (mythological manticores have the faces of humans, whereas in Equestria they're apparently just lions with wings and scorpion tails)
