She shook her head slightly. "No, not really." Just then, something darted into Burke, pushing past him inside. "Scarlet! There you are!"
Scarlet got up quickly, wincing slightly as she went over to Burke, resting a hand on his shoulder. She looked mildly annoyed at her brother. "This is Xavier. Xavier, this is Burke." Xavier looked at him critically. "Burke."
He seemed uncertain, tilting his head as he considered him. “Hello. You’re the one who’s caused all the ruckus tonight?”
"Yes, I suppose so," he said smoothly, turning to Scarlet. "We can't return to the house. At least, not yet, nor with these." He held up a satchel and her eyes widened. "You haven't even come up with a plan? Where do you suppose we'll go?" Xavier paused, glancing at Burke and looking around. Scarlet shook her head. "Absolutely not."
He looked over at Burke again with a small grin. "I do believe you'll be in better company for a small while."
He looked bewildered, looking at the two of them. “...what? I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be inhospitable, but I can’t have the two of you stay here. That’s treason.”
Scarlet raised her hands as if surrendering. "I know! We can't stay here, Xavier. Just.. anywhere else. Burke has been kind enough." Xavier eyed her, before smiling sweetly and drawing his dagger. "Well we wouldn't have a problem if the homeowner were to.. leave.. for a bit, would we?" Her eyes widened as she stepped toward him sharply, raising her hand. She faltered though, as the wound on her side disagreed and she stumbled with a wince. She looked up at Xavier. "If you do that, I will turn you in well as the hearts. So help me, Xavier."
A strange look crossed Burke’s face as he eyed the dagger and his demeanor grew cold and distant. “You shouldn’t be walking on that,” he told Scarlet stiffly. “I’ll leave for tonight, but y’all need to be gone by tomorrow mornin’. I’ll be returning with guards.”
She sucked in air through her teeth before standing straight and looking at him with furrowed brows. "I'm so sorry, Burke."
He looked over at her and said nothing for a moment before giving her a nod of farewell. “Ms. Scarlet. Come on, Logan.” Logan trotted after him, stopping to sniff curiously at Xavier’s feet before the door shut behind them.
Xavier started into the main room, looking around curiously. "Since when do you care about other people's feelings?" he asked with a smirk, looking back at her. Scarlet looked livid. "I cannot believe how stupid you are, Xavier. Not only did you just kick him out of his own house, you stole those hearts and we have find somewhere to hide for a bit." He shrugged. "We'll scout for a place and keep the hearts here until then. No one will suspect a thing." Scarlet glared before going to the door. "I'll start looking. I don't want to stay here." Xavier nodded, watching as Scarlet left before investigating the house further, checking the mantle. He found a heart and raised an eyebrow. He looked around cautiously before slipping it into his pocket.
(Yoop!) By the next morning, Scarlet and Xavier were gone. His heart was gone as well. They had found a temporary abandoned cabin to hide in.
Burke returned to his home with a guard, but there being no evidence, they left him alone. He sighed, going over to sit in his chair, but a quick gaze across the mantle informed him of his loss. He paled and went over to it, sweeping the stuff off to try and find in. Further inspection caused him to curse and he looked around almost frantically. Upon realizing that it truly was gone, he sat down heavily, staring into the dead fireplace.
It was Scarlet, her expression worried and apologetic. She was holding something in her hands. "Burke! I'm so sorry. I didn't realize he taken this," she said anxiously, holding out his heart to him. "I made sure no damage came to it."
