Using magic must burn a lot of calories. She eats like that and all she does is sit around a library...

Actually. according to El Goonish Shive, yes it does. If one's mana reserve is empty calories can be converted into mana.

They don't call in mana in EGS.

Actually that is a interesting thought.

I have always believed magic intrinsically is linked with your life force, though some more physical elements being involved would make sense. Considering mortal limitations.

I remember 2nd edition D&D did that with spells. Like casting Haste would cause you to age one year and Wish would make you age like 10 years or something. It's why there were so many more elf wizards than humans back then.

Can't say I know much about that particular fantasy setting. My kicks from that genre growing up amounted to Nethack and its immediate predecessor.

As far as D&D goes, I've only ever played 5e. The only age spells I remember coming across were wild magic. Haven't played many magic users in my (almost) 4 years so none of them were my fault. :p

Interesting, though I was more referring to MLP and how the show presents magic. But that version of DnD's use of magic is still a unique look on how magic can take a toll on it's users.

Anyway. A episode that got me thinking is when Cadence was using her full magic pool to protect the Crystal Empire and how much it takes a severe toll on her capability to function physically. Most likely running off whatever magic reserves she has left.

This presented a interesting idea that maybe magic isn't pulled from one form of life force, but two. The physical life force and spiritual life force.

The physical life force being our bodies capability to live and function. Affected by both hunger and energy. Thus creating a pool of energy from all the functioning parts.

Spiritual life force, or our spirit energy in our non-corporial state being the core of who we are and our emotions. More raw and powerful. This pool of energy being a large portion of why our spirits are capable of more than our physical self. The bar for limits being higher.

These two forms of life force together being our pool of mana to draw into. The physical getting strength from a healthly regiment of food. The spiritual recovering and building stronger from rest, meditation, and understanding. When physical is tapped out, mana begins to resort to spiritual more heavily. Creating strain on your lifeforce all together.

Eh. No idea if this makes sense to anyone. But it's just a thought.

If you played by the rules, people don't realize how tough being a mage in D&D was. You had to memorize spells every day (resting part of it), plus the spells could have reagents, verbal, and somatic (hand movement) components. That's why they were always after magic items to make their casting easier.
So, appreciate your tanks. You have to stand in the back, use up spell components, say funny words, and wave around your hands like a madman to get that fireball out.

And you have to make sure you have plenty of Cheetos and Mountain Dew. Plus a spare die to roll to see if anyone's getting drunk. :D

Got a few d6 from some old board games, plus a d20 that I use for Star Wars Miniatures, but that's about it.

I'd hate to see what the criticals are like.

No criticals, you roll a six side die and if you roll a one you get swapped. Father decides what your their new form will look like and if you do end up swapping you won't swap again till the story progresses one day. Fathers games tend to be rather slow, it can take multiple sessions for the story to progress that far.

Don't blame me for that people keep asking to roll for stupid things. I mean come on on why the bloody hell would guys turned girls trying to charm skeletons. I have the scenario all set up and they find all sorts of things that I have to look up. That and why in the name of Primus do they always cast magic missile against the darkness? Why not light a torch? [OOC; Never played D&D my knowledge is solely based on sketches of people playing D&D or people talking about www.youtube.com/watch?v=-leYc4oC83E ]

Is that why you stopped letting them pick what they looked like as girls?

Yes but even when I make them flat chested and homely they still flirt with any humanoid monster they come across.
