This. You summed up my response. I'm not sure when being a US citizen and working for money (which slaves never received by the way) became slavery. Considering citizenship slavery is insulting to slaves of that time period, and actual slaves that still exist today. That's called a slippery slope fallacy. I'm sorry, but I will not take the time to refute that, solely on principle.
Thing is with slippery slopes in the U.S. half the time people fall down them. You eat at the government's whim(Food Stamps), you get a place to live at the government's whim (Section 8 Housing), you get a bloody cell phone at the governments whim. Of course if the heads of the government changes then all that can be taken away in the blink of an eye. An example is the unemployment extensions stopped when the Republicans took the house. I'm not belittling anything. The fact of the matter is the government found a new way to enslave people. Now people do have a choice to get out of the circumstances they're in, but many believe they're taking advantage of the government and not the other way around.
The way the U.S. government runs them. Yes they are. Why do you think the Democrat party keeps saying the Republican will take them away if they're elected? There are no plans to do away with the programs but they do need to be reformed. As they are now they most certainly are modern slavery.
