    I wouldn't say they reduced it to a freakshow. They glamorised and exaggerated it, to make it more palatable to a modern audience, sure, but the theme of holding against impossible odds was still very much at it's core.

    I'd say they were a lot more accurate than they could have been; not totally shying away from the brutality of the Spartan culture to try and make them more sympathetic, like some film makers would be liable to do.
