They have a personal fortune, but they are also supported by the state; it's complicated, but they are basically paid by the government to perform state duties.

 

Sounds like the U.S. Congress, only probably more useful.

 

I think Congress is more akin to our House of Lords, another bafflingly outdated system we maintain.

 

Is House of Lords a bunch of rich old guys that exist solely to bicker and prevent government efficiency?

 

Exactly that. A lot of the seats are hereditary.

Except instead of hereditary seats, we have a bunch of senile old dudes who just won't die.

 

yeah. I wonder when the ast time we had someone in congress who wasn't really old was....

 

There are a few members in their 30s, actually.

It's just that the 'important' and 'respected' members are all old white guys who are threatened by any change to the status quo.

Seriously the mods need a topic to let us know why they ban people. Otherwise it makes thing feel like we're walking on eggshells.
