Michael Bay does fantastic action sequences. His problem is that he doesn't understand basic story structure.
I think it's because Bay is over enthused to put action and explosions in everything he does, just about, is what people are making fun of. It's pretty clear he couldn't weave a enchanting story to save his life. It's kinda like he is deliberately doing it for the controversy, and everyone making fun of him is only fueling it... well *squee!*. Bay got us all. That one with Pinkie explaining the REAL reason ponies end up existing, pretty much put me in stitches. Leave it to her to pretty much break immersion and destroy everyone's pony brains with meta explanations.
