Okay, so... The new TMNT episode, Requiem. That was gut-wrenching. My guts are wrenched. That was not not how it was supposed to go! Splinter isn't supposed to die like that! And the Shredder, who has absolutely no humanity left in him at this point, wasn't supposed to survive! I couldn't even enjoy the callback to the first movie because I was in shock at what just happened! For God's sake, Splinter fought the GODDAMNED BATMAN to a draw! He's not supposed to lose, and he's certainly not supposed to die!
Not really. You didn't expect Splinter to die, and your guts are wrenched, right? Unexpected twist right there. >-_-<
I am actually quite literally in mourning right now. I've been a TMNT fan for over 20 years, so watching Splinter die is like losing a favorite uncle. It's pretty much exactly how I felt watching Han Solo die.
...Okay, I'll let someone else handle the topic shift. There's no way I can continue along that line of thought without my words being misconstrued for something harsh.
Nah, I get it. I'm perfectly capable of understanding the difference between fantasy and reality. That's why losing Carrie Fisher hurt a hell of a lot more than losing Han. But, at the same time, when a fictional character is part of your life for a long time, they kinda start to feel like they're more than just a character, y'know?
I suppose. Now that I think about it, I've had a few moments myself. I have a small number of Star Wars EU books (the Legends batch) that I've read from childhood on. Around the time the Yuuzhan Vong conflict finally wrapped up, I'd stopped buying the books because characters I'd been familiar with and liked were either getting killed off or otherwise going off the deep end. It makes sense given the setting, but it never became easier to deal with.
I knew he was going to die already cause I read the summaries for the coming episodes on Wikipedia. That's why I made the comment about them resurrecting him as a bat.
Shredder already killed him once at the end of last season, then the Turtles saved him at the the end of the space/time travel arc. Bring him back again right away seems kinda cheap, especially with how they killed him. Plus, there was a lot of setup in the episode for Leo taking over for him. Splinter seemed to know he wasn't going to survive the fight. If they bring him back at all, I figure it'll probably be as an Obi-Wan Kenobi-type spirit guide. I will say this, though; the scene where Casey crushed the Shredder in the trash truck is a lot more chilling in this version. In the original movie, it was meant to be funny. In the cartoon, there wasn't anything funny about it. Casey was enraged and wanted the Shredder to die horribly for killing Splinter.
