Aspen was asleep in a chair beside the bed, her head resting on the sheets as she waited.
August woke slowly, blinking uncertainly.
Aspen shifted, burying her face in the crook of her arm.
He frowned, looking around as best as he could, squinting at the lights.
Her eyes fluttered as she sat up slowly, not realizing he was awake.
He squirmed uncomfortably, folding his hands slowly.
She blinked, looking over at him. "August?"
He turned his head suddenly. “Aspen. Hey.”
Her voice brightened when she saw him. "You're awake. How do you feel?"
He frowned, shifting slowly. “Sore. What happened?”
"You weren't waking up this morning," she said carefully. "I.. They had to do surgery."
He looked confused. “I didn’t wake up?”
"I was scared. The doctor said you were unconscious but it hardly looked like you were breathing.'
“I don’t remember any of this.”
"You were unconscious."
“Do you not normally remember things when you’re... what was the word again?”
"Unconscious?"
“Yeah, that.”
"Well, it's like being knocked out almost. Uncontrolled sleep."
“Huh. It sounds like death.”
