"Well, a flash bomb probably wouldn't leave me with my eyeballs intact. Daylight's usually okay, though. Just not against sand or snow."
Nightshade blinked in sympathy, her half-Bat eyes flashing in the moonlight. "I can tell you from experience that a flashbang won't fry your eyes, but it'll certainly feel like it did." They rounded a bend in the path and saw the stream fifty yards ahead. "Be ready for anything."
(Speeding things up.) It didn't take long to pick up the cockatrice's trail from the stream. An hour of tracking later, they found themselves standing before a small cave. The bones of dozens of small animals were scattered about, and the shattered remains of a petrified bear lay near the entrance. "Alright," Nightshade whispered, "I'm going in to flush it out. Remember, don't fire until after it undoes the curse."
Nightshade trotted into the cave, and galloped out three minutes later with the cockatrice hot on her hooves. Her body was mottled with patches of gray stone as the curse slowly transformed her. She shouted to Raven, "Explosive bolt! Seal the cave before it goes back in!"
"*squee!*, on it!" Raven loaded up the explosive bolt and took the shot, caving in the ceiling behind them.
"Good. Silver bolt. Be ready." Nightshade took advantage of her petrified hoof to lay a heavy blow across the 'trice's skull, knocking it back and stunning it. Pressing her hoof on the downed creature, she pulled a reflective dagger from her belt and held it up to its eyes. Almost instantly, the cockatrice began turning into gray stone. Just as Nightshade knew it would, it immediately began panicking and squawking, then stilled as it released itself-- and all its other victims-- from the curse. Now healed, she jumped back just as the 'trice popped back up, giving Raven a clear shot.
The cockatrice, as any creature with a crossbow bolt in its brain would, let out a shriek and fell like a sack of hammers. Nightshade clapped. "Nice shot. Now let's get this thing packed up and head home."
"Those bolts are heavier than what you probably learned with. I should have warned you." She pulled a burlap sack from her bag and stuffed the cockatrice inside. "I'll deal with this guy later. Let's get out of here before something big smells the blood."
Nightshade nodded. "I was trying to do this without magic, but screw it, let's get you back home." The pair disappeared in a flash of lazy writing and reappeared just outside the bar.
"Well, that's pretty convenient. But it looks like..." Raven tried to open the door. "Yep, locked out. I should probably sleep at home home tonight anyway."
Nightshade cursed. "Okay, well, damn. I was trying to take you home. It just now occurs to me that I don't where exactly that is."
Nightshade shrugged. "Sure, why not. Lemme just get rid of this..." The cockatrice disappeared. "...And we can head there now."
