I always find the lines of today's music genre's are too blurred to make any definite decision as to the genre's I like and listen to, a lot of it falls down to opinion. I mean I consider most off the bands I listen to as alternative rock, but in the cd stores they are almost always grouped under 'metal'. It's a really, really funny thing music genre's, but to answer the question - I would say yes, I do listen to some of what I would class metal. Namely, Disturbed, KoRn, Slipknot and Motley Crue but none of them to any huge degree (i.e. there not my favourites)
Well, I don't really listen to Metal (THAT metal), but I surely love Disturbed, Korn and such. They're not completely "METAL", but it's nice to see bands still use the classic marks of metal, like the guitar solos and the screams (note - roars).
I love old school death, thrash, heavy and black metal genres. \m/ My top 1 favorite band is Morbid Angel (death metal). I listen Cannibal Corpse; Death; Judas Priest; Treblinka; Tormentor (hun); Mortuary Drape; Bolt Thrower; Death; Napalm Death; Emperor; Mefisto; Holy Moses; etc. List is huge!
Metal is odd in that what exactly "is" metal is defined by the different subgenres, many hardcore metal heads wouldn't consider my taste metal at all while people who listen to pop would say it's definitely hardcore, or something. Basically I like the types that are nonconventional, so pretty much anything post, prog, alt or math- tool, periphery, protest the hero, Isis, etc. Though i'll still listen to more mainstream stuff like all that remains, killswitch, disturbed, etc. Btw, cutie mark crusaders theme performance: sync that to this calling by all that remains and you will be my hero (would work for pretty much anything metal though)
Cutie Mark crusaders maybe combined all the metal subgenres into one and created THE metal (Though IT sucked).
Actually, just one - "Heretic" Unless you're thinking of the those two Vader albums? -- I definitely like metal more than the other bands i listen too now. I do still listen to more alternative/rock music, just not as much lately. Some metal bands I like to listen to are: - Amon Amarth (Melodic Death) - Arch Enemy (Melodic Death) - At The Gates (Melodic Death) - Cavalera Conspiracy (Thrash/Groove) - Children Of Bodom (Melodic Death/Power) - Dark Tranquillity (Melodic Death) - Disturbed (Nu-Metal) - eXodus (Thrash/Groove) - In Flames (Melodic Death) - Iron Maiden (NWOBHM/General Heavy) - Judas Priest (Heavy/Speed) - Kreator (Thrash) - Megadeth (Thrash) - Metallica (Thrash/Speed) - Morbid Angel (Death) - Motorhead (Heavy/Speed) - Nile (Brutal/Technical Death) - Scar Symmetry (Melodic Death) - Sepultura (Death/Thrash) - Slayer (Thrash) - Testament (Thrash) - Vader (Death) Edit: I agree with you 100% on that point Sedaheht! Except in my case, nothing beats listening to some Slayer or Nile while browsing My Little Pony forums! Good times are always had!
Necroing because Metal is my favorite genre of music. I listen to so much of it. I like most all subgenres, my very favorites are Progressive Death Metal and Depressive Suicidal Black Metal. I like really experimental, depressive, and dissonant metal a lot too like this and this I could be here all day listing my favorite bands, but here are just a few: Kalmah, Kaltetod, Death, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Morbid Saint, ColdWorld, Death Angel, Dark Angel, Megadeth, Exdeth, Arsis, Blindead, Coheed and Cambria (I'd consider them prog metal), Sadus, Xenomorph, Control Denied, Vindicator, Vektor (My username is one of their songs), Immortal, Burzum, Bathory, Enslaved, Mithotyn, Kamelot, Silent Force, Nile, Dark Tranquillity, and Marduk. I'll stop there to save you all some trouble.

Huge fan of the power metal here; Bands in particular that I listen to are Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, Avantasia and Edguy.
This is relevant to the interests of this thread Definitely a very creative piece, I love how it blends two things you'd never think would work well together.
Apologies for the necro, but I felt like adding to the topic of metal. I'm a fan of a wide variety of the sub genres (avantgarde, pirate, operatic, death, black, etc.), love how each band manages to sound different from another in the same genre, enjoy the vocals (both clean and guttural), and who could refuse the awesome solos and riffs? To give you a sampling of some of my favorite bands (yes, I do also tend toward certain record labels), here's an incomplete list for you (as the complete list would bore you to tears with a wall of text). Cellpan; Alestorm; Swashbuckle; Tyr; Static-X; Mastodon; Strapping Young Lad; Kamelot; Epica; Lacuna Coil; Motograter; Motorhead; Spineshank; Zoroaster; Witch Mountain; Boris; Kylesa; Six Feet Under; Stolen Babies; Diablo Swing Orchestra; Cellador; Death Angel; Chrome Division; Blind Guardian; Fu Manchu; Crash Kelly; Crucified Barbara; Belphegor; Hammerfall; Brand New Sin; Celtic Frost; Dream Evil; Into Eternity; In This Moment; and so many more! Metalheads unite!

Ya know, I never really got the whole "metal" thing. I tried giving it a shot and some friends gave me some samples to listen to- I ended up being extremely put off. The whole thing was very doom and gloom, aggressive, and hate filled. I try to stay away from any negative things as it puts me in a rather foul mood (thank goodness for MLP). However, I refuse to believe that there aren't any metal songs that don't end up as screeching odes to hate and death. Help a metal newb out?
Most "Stereotypical" metal is black or death metal, as you said hate filled, gloom, etc. etc. If you want the stuff that's not so pointlessly hateful you need to listen to the less mainstream genres of metal, like alt, prog, post, etc. A few good examples: Tool: The Human Abstract: Karnivool: Deftones (well hard to classify them as metal or not, but in general they're a bit "different")
I listen to Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Bullet For My Valentine, Mudvayne, uh... and any others that sound good.
Relatively old thread, but I oughta put in my two bits worth. I was a metalhead long before being a pony fan. Current favourite genres include Swedish [Gothenburg-styled] death metal, atmospheric black metal, power metal, and thrash metal... among many others. It's always amusing to go from Winter-Wrap Up to The Stench of Redemption on the same playlist.
