She began to sprint across the rooftop, trying desperately to get out of his sight so she could make a plan, her heart pounding.
She didn’t look back, and she leaped across to the adjacent rooftops, following the paths into the more familiar ones that went into the city.
After she got about five buildings between them, she went down below the roofs, changing her place in order to lose him.
Once he got to the below the roof, the sudden change of pace threw him off, and he landed rather awkwardly on his leg, the metal workings within snapping, and fell onto the ground, trying to pick himself up with only one working leg.
She looked back, hesitating for a moment. Her instincts told him to run, but she turned back to him, approaching him tentatively. “Abel...?”
He was still trying to stand, falling on the broken leg. He looked up at her sharply, unsure whether to attack or defend.
“I know,” she said gently, raising her hands in surrender. “I know you want to kill me, but I know I can help you with your leg and I don’t want you to fall. Can I come closer?”
She hesitated, standing a few feet away. Something crossed her face and her shoulders slumped as her voice broke. “She really *squee!*ed you up, didn’t she? I thought it might have been... a ruse or something, but you really want to kill me, don’t you? Do you know who I am?”
“Okay, but why am I the enemy? What else do you know?” She tilted her head. “Do you know that you and I have lived together for the past couple months? Do you know that we sleep in the same bed most nights? Do you know that...” Her voice shook and she abandoned her thought, shaking her head. “How much do you not know?”
He visibly faltered, before his expression quickly hardened. "I don't know. But I know It's my job to kill you," he said, standing on his good leg and shifting toward her.
She looked over at him, taking a step back. “Did you love me?” she asked him quietly, her voice low. “Maybe you don’t remember, but I’d like to know before I start running from you again.”
He opened his mouth to speak, but took another step and falling again, grunting as he hit the ground.
She darted forward, catching him before he hit the ground, supporting his weight and flinching. “I know you’re going to hit me, but let me set you down first.”
She helped him to the ground, holding him gently before letting go, trying to pull away. “You won’t let me help you with your leg, right?”
