I had a humorous thought using silly logic. IF 'magic' EQUALS 'unquantifiable' IF 'unquantifiable' EQUALS 'illogical' THEN 'magic' EQUALS 'illogical' IF 'friendship' EQUALS 'magic' IF 'magic' EQUALS 'illogical' THEN 'friendship' EQUALS 'illogical' Bronies, I have just proven that friendship is illogical. Oh dear Akash, what have I done? ...And now onto something completely different. And "town-level durability" means... what now? Barring "Plot-Induced Stupidity", getting hit with his own missiles shouldn't take him out, unless they were missiles with kiloton yields.
Ehm...Why would Starscream not use weaponry that may harm transformers? The Autobots are his usual opponents. And, yes frienship is illogical, it is hard to predict and does not always make logical sense. Same with love. I don't know why arguing with a nonbrony is this fun, but it is. But you know, for a nonbrony you seen quite intrested in how Equestria works. Sure you don't wanna join us:Trollestia:?
...I didn't say he wouldn't use weapons that wouldn't harm Cybertronians. I said he's probably got the durability to tank his own weapons as long as they aren't town-level destroying. I might stick around as the resident black sheep non-brony, but I'm not really interested in watching the show. When I did watch a few episodes, I spent much of the time picking out and ridiculing the parts that I found unpleasing as an author... such as Discord. Terrible villain. You could replace him with a hyperactive 14 year old internet troll who likes to say "I'M BEING RANDOM LOLOLOLOLOL", and you'd get the same effect as Discord (provided you gave said kid Discord's reality warping powers, of course). He's a cheaply made copy of Star Trek's "Q" with none of the sophistication, intellect, or intrigue... Also, Celestia stinks quite a bit of Mary Sue... everyone is like "oh, she's so great, praise Celestia"... except most of the time she seems to be quite useless. :Trollestia: However, I do find bronies... interesting, for some reason. In a psychological way, I want to understand you guys. Don't know why I feel that way, but... I don't really understand you bronies! What drives you to be so into colorful talking ponies? Why does this interest you so much? It's not that great! There really is much more awesome stuff out there! BRONIES, Y U NO MAKE SENSE? And now I don't make sense because I'm still here. GOD DAMN IT.
Why I like the show? Well for once I am a fan of cartoons and animation as a whole. As for the show itself. 1. Great animation 2. Awesome voice acting 3. Intresting and complex characters. 4. Rainbow Dash is awesome, I love girls like her in general and she is basicly my image of perfection. 5. Well done humour without resorting to the lowest common denominator. 6. Well-written, though sometimes simple story. 7. I need something lighthearted and innocent to contrast all the doom and gloom in my other intrests. 8. It is aeons better than it's predecessors (even you have to admit that). This is all just personal opinion of course.
1. Great animation (I can concede to that one. But there have been and are things out there of equal quality, so...) 2. Awesome voice acting (Also give this one to you, the voice acting is certainly above average.) 3. Intresting[sic] and complex characters. (I don't really find them that interesting, to be perfectly honest. And I think Pinkie Pie is about as interesting as Spongebob, which is to say: terrible. She was better when she was insane, at least then she was interesting.) 4. Rainbow Dash is awesome, I love girls like her in general and she is basicly[sic] my image of perfection. (Um... okay? She's kind of a ***** sometimes, though. Don't quite like her. In fact the only pony in the entire series I felt any kind of connection to was Luna, but that's because, as an author myself, I felt she was a character that actually had some depth of character beyond what the others showed. Plus, I guess I just like the sympathetic socially-awkward well-meaning outcasts.) 5. Well done humour without resorting to the lowest common denominator. (Actually the humor makes me facepalm most of the time. And Pinkie Pie just makes me want to get up and leave.) 6. Well-written, though sometimes simple story. (Three words: AESOPS, AESOPS EVERYWHERE. It's like a better version of "Sonic Says" except longer and with colorful ponies instead.) 7. I need something lighthearted and innocent to contrast all the doom and gloom in my other intrests[sic]. (I can understand that. This is why I don't get into SRS GRIMDARK very much. Although a [understandably brief] crossover of MLP and WH40k strikes me as deliciously hilarious in the worst of ways... heh heh heh.) 8. It is aeons better than it's predecessors (even you have to admit that). (...This kind of logic is... well, understand that this statement is very similar structurally to this example: "shooting myself in the toe is preferable to shooting myself in the chest, so I should shoot myself in the toe!" LOLwut?) My opinion: I'm not interested in watching MLP:FiM... but the Youtube parody series "MLP:Friendship is Witchcraft"? In my opinion, it is vastly superior to the original in virtually every way (except voice acting, but that's understandable), and I would totally watch it on TV.
Well it WAS made for 8 year old girls. Then it blew up into a flower. A BEAUTIFUL FLOWER! THATS ON FIRE! You shouldnt really use Darkmoon as an example of an average brony...he's a bit...obsessed. But yeah....Celestia is useless.
Laughing my flank of at your comments. You don't have to watch the series, we are many enough so I don't feel I need to force it down anyones throat. By the way, Pinkie Pie is my second favorite but I understand some people will find her annoying. I am also a Warhammer 40k player, and I agree a pony crossover would be hillarious. Edit. Sparkypony: Yeah, you are right, I am a zealot and should in no way be an example of the average brony. I shall mention though that ponies is not my only obsession.
...And I suppose you're an example of an average brony, then? I advocate sending Celestia to the sun for a millennium. Oh wait— she'd probably [read as: definitely] die, wouldn't she? Hmm. Well, I'm pretty sure everything would still work out okay. I mean, it's not like she actually does anything important like raising the sun... ...Because that's totally the effect of a planet rotating on its magnetic axis. It would be hilarious in the ways of "HERESY!" *BLAM* and EXTERMINATUS. In other words, in a very non-MLP, "oh-dear-this-is-terribly-morbid-but-also-morbidly-hilarious" way. IT IS GOOD FEELING TO BE HONEST, COMRADE. Молодцы.
Did anybody notice how all of the ponies seem much more interesting as characters when they go insane? They should rename it "My Little Mad Pony" and then maybe I'd watch it.
Well, I'm glad to see someone who isn't a brony actually making a point with science and formulas rather than just coming here to have a go at bronies. The points you have made are very logical and somewhat interest me as someone who is somewhat of a science nut. I personally, do not tend to analyze cartoons for the reason of they are cartoons characters, so they are not restricted by our limitations, rules, or even the fundamental laws of nature. One thing I would like to know though is in your calculations, you do not seem to include the size of the planet that the MLP:FiM takes place on; This information (as far as I know) isn't ever really revealed and this would be an important thing to know if you were trying to figure out the fall speed (as some of your equations were doing with Rarity falling). I believe it's the bigger the planet (and more dense the core of the planet is), the more gravity that is exerted onto the object (which in this case, are ponies) which would directly effect terminal velocity. I know you said there is no reason to believe that the "MLPlanet" standard gravity is any different from our standard gravity on Earth, but that was the only point in your original post that bothered me. EDIT: And please, if I'm wrong about something I posted, correct me, I rather be corrected and know for next time I need the information than be ignorant of the right information.
All very interesting. I do have a certain fascination with physics myself, although I'm not as adept with calculations as some. I have long argued that the physics calculations in the Sonic Rainboom section of the MLP Physics Youtube video you referred to were weak. The student who posted it was, after all, just as fallible as the rest of us, and we really can't blame him for making mistakes. Although, the way I figure it, physics in Equestria probably operates on different base principles anyway. Still a cool explanation. Props to you, sir.
Not to de-rail the thread, but I just wanted to say that I don't really care much for the show any more. I hardly watch any of it. I do like the show like any other cartoon I used to enjoy, as I get that sense of nostalgia, but I can understand why you think it's not "all that", because it's not at all in my opinion. Especially on its own. What makes the show more entertaining (from a "brony perspective") is the fanon that is created. You tend to look deeper into the episodes and nitpick little extras that give little inside jokes to the fans. Like Derpy, for example. I do consider myself still a part of the fan base, regardless of my "yeah, the show's okay" attitude, because I enjoy the creations that the community are throwing out every day. Whether it be music, art or animation, as a creative person, this fandom is one where my imagination can thrive. It's truly special to me in that respect. Sure, there are a lot of creative fandoms out there, but I have never seen such an amount of content from one fandom in the less than 2 years it has been around, and that caught my eye, so I just dove right in. I thought I'd just give you that little snippet of my experience... so, you know, make sense of it a bit more? :derpe: Also, great post. Really intriguing, I must say. Thank you for making the effort to contribute, it's incredibly awesome of you.
...Not necessarily. It's actually a lot more complicated than that... You must realize that the larger a planet is, the further away you are from the core of the planet, which means the lower the gravity will be. Density of the planet is also just as important. Take, for example, HAT-P-2b. It's the most massive exosolar planet ever discovered, with 8.65 M♃ (Jupiter mass) and 0.951 R♃ (Jupiter radius). This makes it incredibly dense, and gives it a surface gravity of about 235.5 m/s², or about 24.77 G's. However, it is not the "largest" exosolar planet. If you compare this to HAT-P-1b, the "largest" exosolar planet at 1.225 R♃, you'll notice that it only has a mass of 0.524 M♃, which means the gravity would not only be 0.524 times lower than Jupiter, it would be even lower because the planet is larger in diameter, so the surface is further from the core. Anyways, I assumed the gravity was similar since the rate at which things fall in the series seems to be similar to real life. Therefore, I felt it was close enough to assume a similar standard gravity. My point with this calculation was actually to point out how inconsistent the scene was, not to try to prove that Dash was consistently moving ~108 m/s through it.
Using the gravitational acceleration formula "a = GM/r²", HAT-P-1b would seem to have a gravity of 9.05 m/s², or 0.922 g, which is about 36.5% that of Jupiter and only 3.8% that of HAT-P-2b.
