"No thanks required," he murmured, brushing her hair back. He tipped his head back to watch the stars before squeezing her hand. "There."
"I'm not sure," he admitted. "I'm pretty happy right now. I'd want you to be safe... That'd be nice to not have to worry about."
He grinned and squeezed her hand. "Then I guess I wouldn't really wish for anything," he replied. "I'm happy with you."
He smiled against her lips, his hands cupping her chin as if she were something precious. When they pulled away, he looked up at the sky thoughtfully. "Do you think," he began, "that this was planned? By someone who is higher than us?"
"Well, maybe a god," he said, squinting up into the heavens. "Maybe not. But something. Something greater than us had this all figured out."
