His face had fallen, and he said nothing, rubbing between the cat's ears before sitting up, setting him on the ground. "I think I'm going to head into town."
He gave her a false smile, rubbing the back of his neck before heading for the door. "I'll see you later, okay?"
Her voice quieted, and she continued to follow him. He would be able to tell she was worried. "Jack?"
He glanced over his shoulder with a half-hearted, clearly false smile. "It's okay, Av. I'm just going to go into town. I forgot I had to get some things. I'll see you later, okay?" Without waiting for an answer, he left the house, closing the door behind him.
She looked panicked after he left, fearing she had really hurt his feelings. She wanted to go after him, but felt paranoid leaving the two babies alone.
