"Because then the nickname gets too long, and nobody likes a long nickname, so they'll just refer to you as your normal name." She shrugged. "It's really quite simple, my dear Jack."
"I wouldn't be sad to have people refer to me by my rightful name," he replied. "I don't hate my name."
"Jack is already short," he said, frowning. "There's no need to shorten it." He scratched the back of his neck, thinking. "I mean, I suppose there's times that I've wanted to call you a nickname," he mused. "Like Ave, or Vis. It doesn't really work, though."
"My nickname should be.. Hm.. Avice the Annihilator. I think it has a nice ring to it, don't you?" She looked up at him, her head tilted.
He watched her gently for a moment before realizing that he was staring and looking away. "I don't know, Ave," he said, smirking slightly. "I can't remember the last time you annihilated something."
"I will annihilate everything in my sight, including Edolier. I will burn that place to the ground one day." She laughed. "And you were right. Ave really doesn't work."
"Please don't," she asked, grabbing his arm. Her voice was light and innocent. "Or I will never speak to you again."
He watched her for a moment, his eyes a warm but piercing blue. "Fine, fine," he relented. "I wouldn't want you to stop speaking to me, Vis."
"Ugh! No no no!" She shook her head, her tone scolding. "Bad! You can use that one either. I will not allow it!"
He laughed deeply, as if he had been surprised, and then looked down at her affectionately. "So what variation of your name can I call you?"
"You can call me Avice or Avice the Annihilator. Those are the two options, unless you can come up with a better one that I approve of."
"Hm," he mumbled, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "I think I'll just stick to Av, or Avice. Your name doesn't really need changing."
She crossed her arms, nodding thoughtfully. "That works for me," she decided. "And I will remain calling you Jack, because it is a nice name."
He paused, and a blush threatened to overtake his cheeks, but he managed to push most of it down. "My name is wonderful," he specified with an amused smile.
