There wasn't many words, but it was her handwriting written carefully. "I love you! I miss you a lot, already. I'll see you soon." At the bottom there was a small doodle of Jack, and she obviously hadn't tried very hard on it.
He blinked before a small smile crossed his lips. He kissed the note and folded it, slipping it into his tunic pocket before sitting on his cot, exhaling slowly. Tears pricked at his eyes and he frowned before curling up, pulling the blanket over his shoulders.
Avice was in front of the house. She was facing the forest, painting. The kids played nearby and she was sure to keep on eye on them.
He had a faint pink scar on the side of his neck and he was tanner than when she had last seen him. His curly brown hair was cut shorter, less wild and more managed. However, the eyes that studied her were the same familiar blue and the light spray of freckles across his nose crinkled as he grinned. “Hey, Av.”
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close, his hands coming up to run through her hair. “I’m here.”
