He looked at her, his brow furrowed, obviously hurt. He sighed and stood up and headed for the door, his shoulders slumped.
She watched him go, despite the yearning feeling that tugged at her. She covered her mouth, not wanting any whimpers to slip out.
The words hit her, and a muffled sob escaped when he left. "I love you," she said quietly, even though she knew he couldn't hear her.
Avice stood shakily. She hadn't hoped to be doing this on her own, and it likely wasn't safe, but she persisted nonetheless.
Jack finished looping the rope, and paused to look out to the sea. It was a beautiful day, with clear blue skies and warm wind blowing, but the sky reminded him of her, so he frowned and looked at the ground again.
Avice used the wall to support her as she went to the door, leaving the infirmary to make her way to the captain's quarters.
Avice stepped in, closing the door behind her. She stood by the door, looking at the floor uncertaintly. "Good afternoon."
