Avice lay in bed silently, facing the opposite wall. She didn't quite move when he entered, nor did she say anything.
He paused before a wave of sadness swept over his face. “Oh, baby,” he said quietly, sitting on the bed next to her. “Come here.”
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. He didn’t say anything, just planted small kisses in her hair, rubbing her back.
He didn’t say much, feeling it best to let her go at her own pace, but he rubbed out the tension in her back, murmuring words of love in her ear.
He held her tightly before lying down with her, moving carefully to avoid waking her up. He brushed the hair out of her face, watching her sleep with his brow furrowed. Finally, he sighed and pulled her closer, burying his head in her shoulder and falling into a doze.
His eyes fluttered open and they lay on Avice for a moment. He didn’t want to wake her and so he simply pulled her closer, letting her sleep.
Jack watched her for a moment before closing his eyes again, his nose against her cheek and his forehead against her temple.
