"The Sparks family was one of honor and intelligence. Coming from a long line of lords and ladies, the last known descendants of this family are Tucker William and Aubrey Wren Sparks. Their whereabouts are unknown." Below the words was a family portrait, containing three people. The only adult in the picture was a severe looking man with brown and grey hair and a frown. Beneath him were two children, one boy and one girl, both with startling blue eyes. The black haired, rosy cheeked toddler was clinging to the other child, laughing deeply. The boy who held her had a mop of curly brown hair and light freckles that splatter across his nose. He grinned at the camera, a cheeky, warm smile, and Avice would feel a stab of recognition.
Avice frowned, a strange sense of confusion washing over her as she re-read. After a moment she stood up, holding the book close as she went off to find Jack.
Jack was balancing on a ladder, pulling a book off the shelves. He opened it, and read quietly, his thin fingers tracing the words thoughtfully.
She set the book down silently, then approached, observing his features before she said anything. "Jack?"
She distracted him, and he looked down at her with a smile. "Hey, Rohesia," he said kindly, climbing down the ladder. "What's up?"
"So," she said slowly, hesitating slightly. "I found a book with the Sparks family in it." She paused, waiting to see his reaction.
She nodded, her arms crossing uncomfortably. "You know how we're supposed to be honest with each other, yeah?"
He frowned, unsure of what to do. "Please..." He hesitated before sighing. "Please don't tell anyone about this, okay? It's really important."
He stepped forward, a concerned look on his face. "We are friends, Avice," he said quietly. "You mean a lot to me."
"I don't think I even know your real name," she said, moving away. Her face had a look of frustration. "What kind of friendship is that?"
"I know, it's just... you are the one person I felt like I could trust, but I don't even know right now."
"Jack, I'm sorry." She said his name unevenly, and pulled her hands away. "I just want to think about this."
