He pulled his knife out from his belt. "Nothing you can't handle," he said. "It should just be a little ache."
He studied her face for a moment before flipping the knife over to its dull side and lightly pressing against the edge of the splinter. There was a slight ache, but it surprisingly didn't sting, and Jack plucked the splinter out triumphantly. "Got it," he said cheerfully.
She grinned once it was out, expecting that it would hurt more. "Oh, cool! Thank you!" She smiled brightly at him. "I don't have to worry about that any more, now."
He flicked it off his finger and picked up the rag, returning to his cannon to clean. "You're welcome," he said cheerfully. "I basically just saved your life."
"Totally. My whole arm probably would have been amputated, but now I'm safe," she said, getting back to work. "Splinters are real threats, y'know?"
"Very serious," he said, nodding. "When we were in the ER, and a splinter came in, we all started sweating." (Ah! Sorry! Thought I posted this!)
"In the ER, huh? I suppose some crazy things happened in there," she said, observing a tiny spider on the tip of her finger. (It's all good!)
"Hmm, okay. Besides splinters, what was the scariest thing you've seen?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
He frowned. "A man was once rushed in with a javelin in his chest," he said. "That was pretty scary."
"That does sound really scary," she admitted, looking up at him. "I guess you must've seen some crazy things."
He was quiet for a moment, thinking carefully. I told Natalia, by the way. I told her I wanted to be with you. That's why we're partners. That's why. He shook his head, dismissing the thoughts. It wouldn't work. "How often do you clean these?" he asked instead, looking at her from the corner of his eye.
(YES IT DOES, JACK. IT WILL WORK. JUST WAIT.) "Well, every three days, cause dust accumulates really fast down here, and I don't want it messing them up," she said, her entire arm inside the mouth of one. "It gets kinda mundane after a while."
He laughed when he saw her. His laugh always seemed to surprise him, as if he were shocked that someone managed to catch him off guard. "Right," he said. "Mundane."
She looked at him her brows furrowing. "I think my arm is stuck," she said, her voice a whisper. Although, it wasn't stuck, and she was just pranking him again. His reactions we're always her favorite, for some reason.
He frowned and walked over to her, his eyebrow raised. "Jesus, Rohesia. How long did you say that you'd been doing this for?" he teased.
She pulled her arm out and poked him, not satisfied with his remark. "Ex-cuse you! Accidents happen, you know," she said, her tone playful as she tried to seem annoyed.
