She would hear him chuckle warmly.

"Do you, now?"

 

"Do you believe in that kind of thing? Soulmates?"

 

“I didn’t,” he said thoughtfully. “I used to not believe in it.”

 

He smiled under his hood.

“No. You changed all that.”

 

“Of course. You changed everything, Av.”

 

"I wish you could too, but best not to. Patience, remember?"

 

They hurried down the twists and turns of the halls, gradually going up an incline. Avice might notice certain mages staying with them while others veered from the course.

 

They hurried up until Jack looked around and frowned, his eyes shining under his hood. He paused for a moment before nodding and continuing.

 

“The crew is here,” he murmured to her.

 

“I’m just glad we’ve found each other. It’s a little hard with the hoods.”
