Jack placed Aubrey on the bed carefully, undoing the buttons on her onesie. He sung under his breath for her, changing her into her pajamas as she gurgled with delight, sucking on her fist.
Avice had planned on leaving, but the days events had worn on her. She drifted off, holding herself tightly.
Jack left the room, stopping when he saw Avice on the couch. He hesitated, his expression softening momentarily, before he sighed and walked over, picking her up as gently as he could, trying to keep her asleep.
He set her down in the guest room bed, gently pulling the blankets over her before heading back into his room, closing the door behind him.
Avice awoke the next morning, looking around with wide eyes as she cursed herself for falling asleep. She hesitated, sitting up in the bed. She didn't remember coming to the guest room. Shaking her head, she stood up and made the bed, hoping she could leave before anyone woke up.
Jack woke up blearily. Aubrey was resting against his bare chest, her mouth slightly open. He sat up, careful not to disturb her, before moving to go get a glass of water.
She hesitated, wringing her hands as she did when she was nervous. "I don't want to intrude or anything.."
His smile was dry and his laughter came from the back of his throat. “I think we’re a little past that, don’t you?”
