Miriam began to attend to him, fixing his wound and testing his reflexes. He kept his eyes closed, his brow furrowed.
She shut her eyes as well, leaning protectively over Aubrey as she flickered between staying awake and falling asleep.
When Miriam finished, she sat back on her knees and studied the house. “Right. Well, you three are staying with me.”
"I'm okay," she said quietly, watching him with worried eyes. After a moment she wrapped an arm around his neck in an embrace.
He was quiet for a moment as Miriam cleaned up, packing her bags in silence. “You did the right thing, Av.”
She sniffled, gripping his shirt. "I-I had to pull you from the house.. I didn't.. I didn't know if you were alive.."
