He nodded slowly, starting up the stairs two at a time.

 

Miriam bustled past, picking up her empty stew bowl.

"Something the matter, dear?"

 

She raised an eyebrow, wiping her hands on her apron.

"How so?"

 

"Perhaps," Miriam agreed. "Or perhaps you've simply been through a lot."

 

"Please, take all the time you need."

 

"Of course."

Jack's eyelids fluttered slowly and the first thing he noticed was that it was a great deal darker outside. He sat up blearily, looking around.
