He looked down and noticed that she had fallen asleep. He allowed himself a smile before leaning down and kissing her forehead. "When I give my heart it will be completely Or I'll never give my heart And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too Is when I fall in love with you..."
Aubrey woke, her keen young mind instantly aware of the heat. She pulled her sweaty head away from her father's neck and noticed how hot his skin was. She grunted, hitting her father's face with her palm. Jack's brow was furrowed and he didn't wake, and she gurgled in distress, tugging on his hair.
He didn't respond. He was breathing almost normally, perhaps a little faster than usual, but she would be able to feel heat radiating from his skin from their proximity. His head was tipped back slightly and she would see that his eyes were darting under his eyelids as he slept.
She sat up quickly, feeling his forehead before cursing under her breath. She brushed his cheek worriedly. "Jack? Baby?"
He shifted, his face forming an instinctive grimace as he woke from his shallow sleep. "Av... what's going on?"
He seemed uncertain, muttering under his breath. “I... I was a medic. Am I still a medic? I took classes. There was a professor named Anderson Bartok. Dr. Bartok. He liked my work, I think. He thought I was good at what I did. I never understood that.”
"You're a medic," she murmured, picking up Aubrey. "My medic. I'll be right back." She left the room to grab someone.
Jack stared after her, a plaintive look on his face. “Are you coming back?” he asked into the empty room.
She returned after a minute or two, having just notified someone. She sat by his side, looking worried. "Sorry. I tried to be fast."
He stared blankly into space before his gaze slowly shifted to Avice. “Hey! You’re back. I thought you had taken Aubrey and left. Forever and ever and ever.”
