Aubrey patted her neck, applesauce smeared on her face.

"Miserable," he agreed.

 

He glanced up, wiping the applesauce from Aubrey's face.

"I love you too."

 

"Applesauce Face? Yes, that one is ours."

 

"The one and only."

 

"A bold new legacy."

 

"I would be honored," he said, kissing Aubrey's cheek. "Don't tell her I said so, though."

 

"That is what they call me, yes."

 

"Mm. 'Ol Applesauce Face is the most feared pirate to sail the seas,' they say."

 

"And then Natalia tears them a new one and erases all doubt."

 

"I will always live in my little sister's shadow," he agreed, lying back on the blanket. "That's okay, though. I don't think I want to be too scary."
