"Hey baby," he murmured, taking her out of the backpack as he set her down in her crib. "How're you doin'?"
Avice stopped, hearing Jack. She listened quietly for a moment before going into the room with a small grin.
His back was to her and he didn't hear her come in. "I'm tired," he told Aubrey. "Are you? Let's get ready for bed, just you and I. Just like old times, you know?"
"Mama's gonna be here soon," he told her quietly, brushing a brush through her hair. "Maybe she'll let you sleep with us tonight. I'm not sure. I'm surprised she's not here yet."
