This is something I've been thinking of for quite some time now. If the mane six were in band what kind of music do you think they would play and what do you think they would play? Or maybe not just the mane six, maybe you thought of what some background ponies would do in a band? To me, I think they would be able to play anything they want to! As for what they would play in the band, it would be as follows: Lead vocals: Rarity Lead guitar/backing vocals: Rainbow Dash Rhythm guitar/backing vocals: Applejack Bass/(melodic)backing vocals: Fluttershy Keyboards/Electronics/other percussion: Twilight Sparkle Drums: Pinkie Pie I'll wait until I get a few more responses, then I'll explain why i came to those decisions. I don't want to have this first post be super massive.
I can agree to most of that, but I'd say Pinkie Pie would double as lead vocalist and drummer, I mean she breaks out into song much more consistently then any of the others, on top of that her personality is one to put herself out there in as many ways as possible. Plus she can play like 6 instruments at once, I don't think she'd have a problem singing and drumming haha (works for the Foo-fighters). As for Rarity, well she'd probably do back up vocals and possibly Electronics, depending on the band set-up Really if I'd give her any instrument specifically it'd probably be like Violin, though it seems what you're looking for is a rock band set-up, so something more conventional would probably be like the rock-organ.
Rarity- Tenor Saxophone- It has the same flexibility in sound and glamour about it that is Rarity Rainbow Dash- Trumpet- It is loud and bright. 'nuff said. Applejack- Upright Bass- It holds steady for the rest of the band. Fluttershy- Flute- Soft and gentle usually, but can be used to create a creepy tension if used correctly. Twilight Sparkle- Clarinet- Mellow and reserved sounding. Pinkie Pie- Trombone- Can be used to sound silly, serious, or sad. One good trombone can energize a phrase.
Time for me to explain why I think each pony would be what they would in a band. Sorry if it's a bit lengthy. Rarity - Lead vocals She is the type that would crave any amount of time in the spotlight. Rainbow Dash - Lead Guitar/backing vocals Come on, RD is the only one (although some will feel different) that can pull off being a lead guitarist! Being a lead guitarist would not only make her the best flyer in all Equestria, but also the fastest hooves in all of Equestria as well! Applejack - Rhythm guitar/backing vocals She seems like the type that wouldn't always be interested in doing all the hard parts a lead guitarist would do, but that dosen't mean AJ would totally hate having solos every so often! Note on AJ and RD: Being two that like to compete a lot, I can see their guitar solos themselves being guitar battles! Fluttershy - Bass/(melodic)backing vocals Now Fluttershy would seem like the type to not play a type of guitar that would involve really complex parts. She would most likely be the type to play something with more simpler parts. And while being the bass player in the band, this would mean she wouldn't always be in the main spotlight, which would put her at a bit more ease (I say "a bit more" because being on stage in front of, say, 10,000 would be pretty nerve-wracking for someone like her). Twilight Sparkle - Keyboards/Electronics/other percussion Twilight would be perfect for this position because, when it comes to electronics, it would require more brain-power to be able to understand that kind of stuff. Pinkie Pie - Drums She's already hyper enough on the show! Can you imagine how insane she would be on a drumkit? I'll give you a bit to visulaize that. *waits for a bit* ... ... Yeah, it's an awesome thought, isn't it? Because of that possible insanity on the drums, I would like to see her play super-fast blast beats in any death metal song! Also, something I forgot to mention about the other five (excluding Rarity): I can picture them all doing backing vocals. Every last one of them has an awesome singing voice!
Pinkie Pie - Lead singer/drummer - She seems more inclined to be one of the lead singers, with how much she sings in the show. She wouldn't mind being in the spotlight. High energy would enable her to do both. Rainbow Dash - Lead guitar/lead singer/pyrotechnics - Also high energy. Would have some amazing ideas for pyrotechnic displays, in my opinion. Natural speed would mean fast guitar playing. Applejack - Cowbell/standing bass/backup singer - "I have a fever, and the only cure is more cowbell!" Seriously, it was only a matter of time before someone suggested it. That and I feel both the cowbell and standing bass would suit her. Rarity - Electric violin/backup singer/outfits - Outfits is an obvious suggestion for her. I went with electric violin over normal violin for the slightly more modern edge, and I think it would appeal to her more. Twilight Sparkle - Keyboard/synths/mixing/backup singer/song writer - All this on top of being overall peacekeeper in arguments, because I'm sure there would be many. I feel she would be able to come up with lyrics that everypony could agree upon. She has the smarts and organizational skills to pull off doing so many things in the band. Fluttershy - Harp/didgeridoo/backup singer - I thought it would give her a good musical contrast with the two instruments, and give the band more diversity.
Does it have to be the mane cast all in the same band? Pinkie Pie: It's established canon that Pinkie is a multi-instrumentalist. She'd probably get things done quicker and better if she played all instruments herself without any backing band and produced herself. Rarity: Lead vocals, rhythm guitar, occasionally piano. Think Prince when he had The Revolution. If you can't, try to get a hold of a copy of Purple Rain. Alternatively, something like David Bowie. Twilight Sparkle: Instruments-wise, the more tech, the better. She'd be Brian Eno, Trevor Horn, Giorgio Moroder and Alan Parsons all rolled into one. Or take the role of Wendy & Lisa in The Revolution. It seems almost out of character that she's such a good singer. So it's both vocals and all electronic instruments you can imagine. She might make a great female, equine Peter Gabriel (without the "Genesis are lame" allures). Applejack: Anything folk- or rather bluegrass-related. She almost seemed and sounded out of place during the Winter Wrap-up song although it is quite acoustic. Rainbow Dash: Lead singer, lead guitar. Genres: Certain British punk, British speed metal. I somehow can't see her play typical American music. Fluttershy: Celtic flute, acoustic lead violin (and I mean neither fiddle nor Vanessa-Mae), harp perhaps (although we'd better leave that to Lyra and/or Harpo). I can totally see her play Celtic/Irish folk music, maybe also sing. So they'd impossibly all fit into one and the same band. Well, while I'm already at it, how about some more characters? The Flower Ponies: Doo Wop singers. Or Ponyville's answer to Wilson Phillips. At least they're all singers. Lyra: Would quite likely have a folk band with Fluttershy and play plucked strings. Cheerilee: Pop singer. Back in her time, girls didn't want to play instruments. Princess Luna: Pop singer again. She'd simply go by the name "Luna", somehow like Princess Stéphanie of Monaco did back in the 80s. Clover: Vocals, guitar, the head of a pub band called "The Ponyvillers". Flutterguy: Equestria's answer to Isaac Hayes, just without the swear words.
