I used to be the exact same, bro. I didn't always know this, and I think if I'd have known it earlier, I'd be a better artist right now.

It's fine to take inspiration, it really is. Taking elements, no matter how large, of an artist can give you a sense of direction and experience. The issue is, as you highlighted, trying to copy one single person. There's no use copying someone who already exists because they're better at being them than you. You'd just be a lesser version of something that exists, and what's the use of that? However, by taking from several artists, you combine into something new, and that's where you find yourself.

And bro you need to post your stuff, I'm like, genuinely excited.

Also I swear to God I don't try to get the top post on every page, I promise.

I like to find something to inspire me on my own. I may have just found it too.

I always find it hard to pull just a few elements from artist, but in time I guess I will learn.

Here is the most recent art work that's been completed. It was a gift for Glitter in the secret santa thing.

I shall try to have something to post in the next few days.

Well i did this after work, from about 8 AM to 11:30. I really wish I could shade. I spent at least an hour trying before giving up and just leaving it the way it was.

Not bad Pixel, I like the way you did the horn considering perception. What program are you using?

    Also Applebloom WIP.

I'm in a bit of a slump right now, but I think it's because I'm trying new things and I'm adjusting to them.

    Also I'm tired and messy.

    New laptop on order. yay~
This means more time to doodle and draw on the digital side, which I'm still battling... I prefer pencil and paper still, even after over a year on OCanvas and Photoshop. :sigh:
I want to post my non-pony stuff, might make a separate thread of that in the other visual art board. Not as exciting as ponies, I know, but I would like for others to see my non-MLP works, as ponies are still new to me on an anatomical level.

    Thank you Lupr.

I use paint tools sai. I plan on redoing it today. I'm trying to pull my self away for the linework tool. I feel it is holding my back.

I want to make it darker, like more evil to fit the side of FEAR.

I desperately want to able to do manes like you do.

    For you, my good chum.

And I hear you on pony anatomy. I know it sounds weird, but study human anatomy first. It's such a staple thing to know, it will help a lot, even if it doesn't seem so. What has human anatomy got to do with pony anatomy? Fact is, by doing so you learn about anatomy in general, and things such as skeletons and fleshing out make a bit more sense.

Right now I'm going through a bit of a crap patch where I can't finish anything and I have no idea what I'm doing. But, that's growing pains I guess.

I always wanted to try a human, i just don't feel I'd be any good at them. Ponies seemed like it could lead to humans. So I've been thinking backwards.

How do you do that manes, lupr? I love the way they are done.

How did I miss your post? Anyway, it's all about the brush tool. I work exclusively with brushes (brush, air brush and blur). In fact I only ever touch the pen tool when I feel like doing rough linework with it. I just go over the general direction of the hair with a large, dull brush, then over the course of a few layers, constantly refine it. Tweaking the brushes is pretty important. There are some settings that give a real hair-like touch. They can be a bit of a pain to work with, but like anything, practice helps. I'm not the best at hair and manes, although I do feel comfortable doing them.

Goes back to that thing about trying things you can't do, failing, then using the experience to have another blast at it. Then just rinse and repeat until you can do it. Or, as you said, go backwards. In fact, that sounds like something I'm doing right now. Most of my stuff is portraits, because anatomy is my weak spot. However, by getting used to the pony shape, and actually staying within my comfort zone, I might eventually be able to apply that to humans.

Interesting point, Pixel. Just goes to prove that there's no one way of developing in art, there are tons.

Try using brushes. Lowering the density really helps with shading.

Thank you. I learned from Bandpuffs tutorials, He does it show style. I like the shows style, but I want to do something like you do.

I always use the marker tool. I never went out side of it. Except for using the blur.

I will be sure to apply all the above to my attempt to redo it today.

Well, the reason why I seem to have latched onto pony anatomy quicker than I thought is because I practiced human anatomy for a long time in order to make my art final piece at school easier. It worked!
I shall post my stuff later tonight! Thanks for the link!
