Bones, bones, bones, bones, bones! When I really want to get how something's put together, I do studies as realistically as I can at first, especially looking at skeletons (OMG camels? yeah. they're crazy looking. but i digress...) Once that makes sense to me, the more 'cartoony' versions I draw come out better and are more convincing, even when I whip them off quickly as stick figures in storyboards and stuff. This is true for animals, humans, heck, even pieces of furniture. You have to break it down before you can build it up again :3
I have to get pony bodies right before I try things like discord and spike. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
I said I'd check this out, and although I can take ages to do something, I always stick to my word. You're improving, that's for sure. I see you tried out some some of those brushes for the hair, that's good to see. Same goes for the use of shading, it's a very good start. I guess from here you just keep working at it, using what you now know to build towards further improvement. Really awesome to see how you're coming along.
Thanks Lupr. I tried something different. I actually had fun drawing this way. I still playing with how to make the mane the way I want them to look. BTW, I used this to help me draw mine. Spoiler: pic
Aha, glad to see that came in handy for something. It's nice to see you saying you had fun using different techniques; if something like art isn't fun, it's not really worth doing. Yes it's difficult sometimes, and there are tough elements to it, but ultimately you should be enjoying the experience. I would be doing a bit more art but I'm busy right now, so other things have taken priority.
Believe me. I love it. While my recent undertaking may be well beyond my skill. I can always come back and redo them when I'm better. It will be nice to look back 6 months from now and see how I used to draw. I really wish this thread would get more traffic. Post in it and boom 10 seconds later it's gone. -- Sent from my Palm Pre using Forums
I was going to do something for that Equestria Daily thing, where you had to draw a pony in armour or in uniform. I went for uniform, but I'd have to draw a hat. I can't be bothered drawing a hat. Those 3 magical letters that I always use, WIP.
Oh man Lupr, that looks fantastic! Really officious and imposing. You shade so well Kinda looks like it could be the basis for a really dark fanfic about interrogation by the Equestrian Gestapo... C'mon, you know that Celestia's got a secret police force somewhere You did that in paint? With a mouse? Amazing work. Nice work on the colours too, and the cutie mark looks great I love this thread, it should really get more traffic. I might upload some sketches I did of the Mane 6 last week if I get the chance.
Glad you like it. I'll be honest, I'm none to pleased with it; the shading is proving a real drag. I'm really just fed up at the moment and can't be bothered tackling it, but the only way I get out of this kind of mindset is to just trundle on anyway. I might not like what comes out, but otherwise I'll get rusty and it's really hard to get back into the momentum of things when that happens. Interesting how you say it beckons an equivalent to the Gestapo, I think I was subliminally going for something like that. Problem is, I have no idea who the pony is. I think I kind of went for Twilight, but right now it could be anyone. I did kind of make it an earth pony, so who knows. Cosmo, as someone who used to use MS Paint and a mouse, I can only applaud that. It's not easy drawing like that, but you've definitely done really well.
It was a combination of the backlight and the creepy stare. I saw it and immediately heard a voice in my head say "Ze gut doktor hass vays to make you talk..." As for making the subject Twilight or someone else who's known to the audience, I think that the character's identity should remain unknown. That way we're left to assume the worst I've also been trying to work out if its smiling or not; I don't know if you planned to add more detail to the face, but I actually think that the dark and shadows make it more effective. The ambiguity makes it creepier.
That looks amazing for a WIP. I mean it. just that dark creepy stare. I love it . I would love to see your whole WIP folder. It look a little like Rainbow Dash MS paint and a mouse, darn impressive. I am horrible with a mouse. I first time trying looked like a mess of colors. Good job You are so right.
It's far larger than my finished folder, I'll say that much. I'll upload them all one day. I have a tumblr I've reserved for my art, but I'm waiting to get better before I use it. Prizes to whoever finds it. Because of you I actually decided to make it her. Screw wings, though. Couldn't be assed. I need help though, guys. 1. Does it look like she's wearing a uniform of any kind? 2. Right or left i.e. light or dark? Quicker the replies the better. Thank you, all.
I prefer the one on the right. The lighting goes with the profile well and what needs to be visible is visible while still keeping it dark and forboding. The contrast with the lighter background and the sharper silhouette also works well. And yeah, definitely looks like a uniform. And a smart one at that! Nice work, clothes are always hard. Kinda reminds me of imperial officers on the death star; anyone else getting a Tarkin vibe?
Took me about forty five minutes. *squee!*ty background and weird looking neck, but I think it turned out well.
Darn right it turned out good. All that with MS paint and a mouse? I have trouble with pony anatomy, I definitely can't do a dragon.
