I think this episode was about as well played as it could be without turning it into a two parter, which actually would have been very do-able and would have been excellent. Seeing Zecora was really good. Zecora may be the single most interesting character of all. She's one of my favorites, and certainly is my favorite among non-regulars, with the exception of Luna, who I think will be seen more often from now on. Pip was kind of different, simply because he's a colt rather than a filly. The show is so heavily female dominated, it's kind of strange when you think about it. Males are generally just background characters. Luna is going to develop into a very interesting character, I think, as she gets more used to dealing with common ponyfolk on their level.
It was SO AWESOME to see Luna again! You want to know how I felt as soon as I saw her? That feeling you get when you're reunited with someone again after so long! No joke! You know, you're almost driven to tears of happiness! Luna is now one of my top favorite chracters on this show! She was so cool in this episode! I really hope this isn't the only time we see her this season. I'm not sure if this was mentioned here yet, but the reason Luna looks so different than in S1E2 is because in that episode, she (as NMM) got blasted with the elements of harmony, so all her powers she had as NMM were totally gone. I read something that Luaren Faust said that the reason Luna wasn't seen for most of season 1 was because, in that time, she was regaining all her lost powers back. Which explains why she looks like she does now. More like Celestia, while still (unless we get a shot of them together in the show soon) remaining smaller (being the younger sister). The introduction of Pip in this episode is because this season, the writers wanted to a.) introduce some new characters and b.) expand on the male population of Equestrai/Ponyville. What do I think of him? Don't like him, but I don't hate him though. I won't mind if he does/dosen't come back in the future. Actually, when I forst heard/saw him in that one clip of this episode that was released, I thought a couple things. 1.) I though "what the hay is that thing supposed to be? It looks like a cross between a cat and a mutant squirrel!" But then I learned that he's supposed to based off a British Spotted Pony. Whcih might explain why he looks so differnet, I think. 2.) I actually found him a little annoying when I first heard him speak. No offense to any brit's here. But now? Like I said before, I don't like him, but I don't hate him. I've been wanting Zecora to come back this season! I did not expect her to come back so soon! The writers are doing an awesome job with Derpy this season! So far, in some way, she's been in every episode! The reason Rarity wasn't in this episode is because the there originally was supposed to be a scene with her in it, but it got cut for time constraints. The scene with her in it was going to be this (if I'm remembering correctly): Twilight is taking Luna to Raritys to get her a costume for Nightmare Night. Rarity tells Twilight that, being the perfectionsit that Raity is, her costume wasn't ready. The costume Rarity makes for Luna is a pink princess get-up. Luna tears it off and runs out of Carousel Boutique. Then Pinkie Pie sees her with a piece of pink fabric in her mouth and assumes Luna "ate another princess". I think I got that right.
I really enjoyed this episode. This was not the Luna I was expecting, but, of course, that's thanks to some fanon I've seen. In a way, I'm glad that she didn't turn out to be that way. I like how her behavior is somewhat more traditional for a princess, which makes sense since she's been away for 1,000 years. Despite that, she did show elements of her personality that were similar to fanon Luna, but only in times of sadness. There were a couple of things that bothered me though. Luna's mane and tail look more like that of Nightmare Moon's than the way hers did after the Elements were used on her. Also, I don't quite understand why the ponies would fear Nightmare Moon after she was defeated by the Mane Six. To me, that seemed out of place in general. Prior to Season 1 Episode 1, it would seem out of place because she was imprisoned in the moon, and after her defeat it seems out of place because she no longer exists (or does she?). I know Luna said that she used the royal "we," but it sounded as if her and Nightmare Moon's voice were speaking in unison when she was really loud. Does that imply that Nightmare Moon and Luna are part of the same entity? Perhaps I'm thinking way too into this, as usual. Regardless, I did like the background story Zecora gave about Nightmare Night. My favorite pony, Pinkie Pie, did not disappoint. She rarely ever does. I liked her as a chicken, although it would've been a lot funnier if Scootaloo was a chicken. The only part that annoyed me a bit was how she kept telling the other fillies and colts that Luna was Nightmare Moon and she was going to gobble them up. Later on we know the real reason for this. She was just having fun being scared. The moment I saw this scene, I knew there were going to be some comments about it being taken out of context: Oh boy... I like Pipsqueak as well. I hope we get to see more of him, as well as Princess Luna in the future. Spike's costume made me laugh. A dragon wearing a dragon's costume, heh. Well, I believe that's all I have to say about this for now. I know I'm a couple of days late, but overall I really liked the episode and it was great to see Luna again. I just hope we get to see her every now and then. I certainly hope she isn't "banished" to Season 3. I would like it if she became more of a recurring character.
I don't know, I think it's funnier this way. She's dressed as a werewolf. Wolves eat chickens. I mean, that might not be the intention of the writers/Studio B/whoever decided on the costumes, but I like to think that's the joke. ^Agreed. So much. I wouldn't mind seeing Celestia a bit more, either, if it means seeing her character explored a bit more (Season Two has revealed to us her when she's angry, so at least there's that). I admit, I'm fascinated by the princesses!
Me too! Maybe have her show up almost as often as Celestia shows up. Only maybe about half the time she shows up.
heres hoping for a guest appearance in future episodes
The part where she comes out of the beach ball and scares the CMCs? That did make her look like a creepy rapist. If that's not it, then I don't know.
Yeah, I agree. That scene was rather creepy. :ahh: I thought her entrance was awesome! I was just so happy to see Luna again after she had mysteriously disappeared after her only appearance. As I said in my previous post, I just hope they don't repeat that pattern.
Me too! I was also going to say "Kind of makes me wish Celestia would get that dramatic an entrance", but she's the main Princess of the show, so she's gotten a a few like that already.
This episode is what caused me to pledge allegiance to our equine overlords. Or something like that... I just love a good redemption story/holiday special. It's the Christmas carol, except replace Christmas with Halloween, London with horses, and Scrooge with a former dark princess. Or something like that... In other news, this is my first ever post on the site.
I liked this episode, from the description it sounded really interesting; plus Luna is in it! I really liked Luna's redesign, the exact opposite of Princess Celestia which is the way it really should've been. As others have said, we had no idea what Princess Luna's personality would be. In the end I liked her, she seemed like she meant good, she's just old fashioned (trollestia up to her antics again?). I was actually expecting Princess Celestia to appear, oh well. There where some good parts in this episode: -"No i'm not, I'm a chicken" -Fluttershy's voice lessons -Luna's old fashioned talk made me laugh a bit: "Tis a lie! Thy backside is whole and ungobbled, thou ungrateful whelp" The only problem I have is........where was Rarity!?
LUNA IS AWESOME!!! I'm glad she was in this episode! It was awesome. My fav part is when Luna shapshifted into Nightmare Moon and scared the other ponies.
It just occured to me that this episode was not only about Luna trying to get accepted by the other ponies... it's also about her being able to accept herself. She must truly have been the loneliest pony in all of Equestria if she didn't even have any knowlegde of the simple concept of having fun. And there she is, in Ponyville, lacking any social skills whatsoever and desperately trying to hide that fact by holding onto royal protocol for her dear life. When this is not working, she tries her best to blend in with the other ponies, which works... for a little while. But only when she finally (if reluctantly) accepts everything about herself (including the darker aspects that are considered scary or nightmareish), she finally finds the acceptance she searched for, resulting in the happy end. Was this just because of Nightmare Night or was the episode trying to teach it's viewers a surprisingly subtle version of the lesson "it's best to just be yourself"... or am I just overanalyzing things? Or... whatever... :derpe:
