"It would seem really likely. If we realized how they worked, we could prevent access for the Super Mutants to get in and create more of their brethren. Locking the door from the inside while hacking it from a secure location, like the Overseer's office. The Overseer's terminal could be able to do that, although it's just theory. Let's keep going and see what we find, there might be an entire vat of FEV somewhere that the Mutants are using as a supply. If we could prevent access...or just destroy the thing outright....wait...no, that might not work. We need nothing short of a Mini-Nuke to do anything like that."
Jonathan pursed his lips, "I say we just somehow diable the rooms, looks like there's lsrge vents in them, so i'm going to guess that this FEV is some kind of aerosol, so we disable the vents, we shut down the whole thing."
"The vents are highly likely to be controlled by an important terminal in the laboratory. Once we shut down the vents, we destroy the terminal that makes it happen. With no way to open the air vents back up, and to jam the doors into the room if you're still up with that idea, creating more Super Mutants would be impossible for them. Once that happens, we could actually make a difference in this damn war." Taylor told him as they headed deeper and deeper into the Vault. "We could rescue the prisoners they've held captive as well, if they are still alive that is."
Jonathan nodded in agreement and as they rounded a corner, Jonathan froze at the sight of a Super Mutant in one of the holding cells, but this one was wearing a "Vault 87" jumpsuit, "Taylor, it's an original." He muttered to hear, but as they got closer, the super mutant suddenly used the intercom to try to speak to them. "Eh...You two, over here! Please...I...I eh need your help." It told them.
Taylor and Jonathan got close to the talking mutant behind a window, as it spoke into an intercom. "Either that you two are real, or I'm going quite mad. Are you two real humans?" "Yes, we're real." Taylor said to the talking mutant: "You actually seem quite intelligent, so I'm guessing that your other kin ironically consider you a mutant." "Yes, it is ironic." The Mutant said. The Super Mutant would then go in to introduce himself as Fawkes, who described himself as a "Meta-Human" instead of a Super Mutant. Intelligent as he was, he had been locked inside the small cell for almost 200 years. Due to his immunity to radiation, he could also retrieve the GECK for both Jonathan and Taylor. He only wanted one thing in return, his freedom.
"Well, just so happens we were going to the maintenance room anyways." Jonathan told Fawkes, "But how could we trust you won't attack us as soon as you get out?" "Well...I guess I wouldn't blame you, but I won't back down from my promise, I'm not like my fellow Meta Humans who have encountered so far. And eh, just be warned. If you trigger the fire alarm, ALL the doors will be opened." Jonathan nodded before looking down the hallway Fawkes mentioned, "Alright, Fawkes, you got a deal." Jonathan then lead the way down the hall, seeing a couple rooms with Centaurs in them, one with several dead Raiders, and one with a man who looked mostly alive and intact. He then peeked around the corner into the maintenance room to see two super mutants standing guard around the room, but they happened to be fairly close to each other, so Jonathan pulled out two of his last three grenades and pulled their pins before tossing them in, quickly getting to cover. The explosion instantly killed the super mutants, the shrapnel tearing them several new holes, along with the contained shockwave. Peeking in, he confirmed both were dead and not much damage was done. But he noticed a terminal next to the console that had the fire alarm on it. "Hey, Taylor, how good are you at hacking? I have a feeling that terminal right there will do what we need it to do."
"Should be easy. I used to hack circles around the Vault's mainframe as a kid. Shouldn't take more then a moment." Taylor said before finding the terminal. Within five or so seconds, she got herself in the system. "Alright, here we go" she said, adding the finishing touches to her hack as the fire alarm went off. Once she was done, she took her Laser Rifle out and headed back into the hallway.
(Hacking the terminal allowed you to open certain cells instead of unlocking them all through the fire alarm)
(Ah, forgot about that.) Certain cells opened, including the one that contained their newest 9ft tall green-skinned companion. Fawkes started laughing in happiness or some different emotion. He was free, and he was going to fulfil how promise. All he needed to do was remove some vermin, namely some Centaurs.
Jonathan then started looking around the room, moticing some rusted parts, so he fixed them, suddenly activating an option on the terminal that said "Emergency Vault-Tec Assignment shut-down".
Taylor noticed the option appear on the terminal, all the while Fawkes was getting his long deserved revenge on the Centaurs. As she went over, she looked at the option on the terminal and thought about it. "Jonathan, look at this."
Jonathan walked over, "Yes?" He asked, lookibg at the option, "Vault-Tex expri- What...Do you think that means Vault Tec is responsible for the super mutant problem? Whether on accident on purpose?"
"Looks like this was on purpose. I've been in other Vaults, they were nothing more then social experiments." Taylor told Jonathan. "We should get the GECK first, then shut it down in the way back. I don't want to do things the other way around because it might accidentally shut all of the door to the GECK on accident." Fawkes then came inside the room. "Thank you for releasing me, I owe you my life. Now, onto more important things" The giant said in his gravelly voice. "I can retrieve the GECK, you two stay here."
Jonathan looked up at the sound of shambling footsteps and Fawkes came in with a briefcase in hand, "Here you go! I sincerly thank you for freeing me, now I'm afraid we must now part ways." Jonathan nodded as he took the briefcase "Well, thank you Fawkes, and good luck."he then looked to aylor, "Kill the Vault and lets get out of here."
Taylor nodded as she went onto the console and set the Vault to destroy itself. She managed to turn the Vault into a giant time-bomb, setting the nuclear reactor that powered the vault to go into meltdown and erase everything of importance. She also made sure that only the vault itself was destroyed, not the surrounding caves and Little Lamplight. With the FEV chambers closed along with the airvents, the self destruct process would take around half an hour. Long enough to get out of Vault 87, but soon enough to ensure that nobody ever set foot inside that cursed place. By the time that Jonathan and Taylor were walking through the caves back to Lamplight, a distant explosion was sounded.
(I was going to position it so that would happen just outside of the cave to escape the inevitable explosion, not inside the Vault itself.)
(ahh, oki) Jonathan turned back around at the sound of the explosion, "Quite the energency stop" he muttered
