After what felt like an eternity of the Confederacy slowly forcing their way closer and closer to the defensive wall and the pummeling of artillery on both sides, thirty thousand reinforcements from Fort Worth came in, and before Allen knew it, they were being ordered to rapel down the wall and run through the safe areas of the defensive barriers, chasing a now fleeing Confederate army, yelling at the top of their lungs as the sun hung lowly in the sky. By noon, they had given chase to the Confederates all the way back to their main camp, 15 miles away. Little did he know it, but they had destroyed nearly 80% of the attacking Confederate army across the entire Texarkana front. 2 million men lay wounded or dead on the Confederate side, with only 50,000 taken on their own. After pausing for an hour in the camp, where they feasted on both their meals and the Confederate. After the feast, they got new orders; a massive counter offensive was to be launched to drive the Confederacy out of the section of Lousisana cut off from the rest of the Confederacy by the Red and Mississippi Rivers and establish new defensive borders there.

    ********

A few hours later, the full scale of the disastrous attack reached the military command at Little Rock in the form of the exhausted, bloodied, demoralized survivors. Of the 2 and a half million Confederate soldjers sent off to fight, only about 200,000 made it back to Little Rock, the other half of the survivors either scattered to the wind or were captured. As they trudged by the city entrance, the generals watched on in horror as they looked at the soldiers who had discarded virtually anything they slowed them down, weapons, ammo, grenadws, helmets, armor, many actually were wearing nothing more than an undershirt and a pair of shorts. Even though they were safe, the fear of the coming, like Texan counter offensive motivated them to keep shambling along, only stopping were they dropped from exhaustion as they trudged on like zombies.
"What have we done..." one general muttered
"We have opened a Pandora's box, that's what..." another muttered beforw turning to look at each other, "Fall back to behind the Mississippi?"
"Yes. We can't afford to lose any more troops. Get anyone who will come and lets go!"

    ***

Union soldiers were actually doing similar things as the Sorians to prepare, their commanders telling them for once to dig in and defend and not to give up an inch of ground.

    1 week later

Inside of Denver, Sonian and Union forces had been stockpiling throughout the week on any sort of weaponry that would be valuable to the progress of the battle. On one hand, the Sonian's had placed an emphasis on down and dirty short to medium ranged weaponry that ranged from shotguns, carbines and anything in between. However, they were not afraid for long range weaponry either with Snipers and even rocket launchers being available to other troopers. Throughout the week, efforts had been placed on building up an arsenal, placing the finishing touches on the already fearsome fortifications, and taking every opportunity they could to bug and listen to Union Intel.

A specific psychological weapon that unfortunately needed to be cancelled was a sonic frequency that acted like white noise, but was completely untraceable to any Union solider who was awake. Sonia was originally going to place the frequency onto a radio during the middle of the night, and the frequency would ravage the mind of the sleeping Union soldiers with psychopathic thoughts that would lead them to turn onto another. Unfortunately, it was never used due to fears of the Union finding out about the weapon and that a spy would have been risky, alongside that it only worked if the subjects were sleeping, so the weapon was destroyed incase the Union won Denver and used the weapon as leverage.

Lucas had heard about the success that had been occurring in Texas against the confederates, and knew about why the Confederates and the Union had agreed to a ceasefire from one of the higher military brass. As much as a Texan victory...no, he could have not even called it a battle. It was a massacre if anything else. The Union couldn't risk facing Texan might, especially after what has happened in the south. As much as Sonia wanted to control the entire west, he believed that any further expansion would likely destroy them. All Sonia wanted was not only to maintain it's independence, but to remain peaceful instead of the tyrant that the Union president had become. Lucas took his helmet and rifle and headed outside, the Union was about to reach breaking point and were set to finally within the next half an hour.

Luckily for Sonia, they were more than ready. It was going to be an absolute bloodbath.

(Made a couple maps; http://i.imgur.com/pBaajS7.jpg (the lines with slashes in them are the fall back positions in case the front lines are overwhelmed. The Soria fall back line relies heavily on natural gullies and such but is weak on the flat land it has to cross in valleys and such, but the gullies, as they are often steep and sudden, would be hard to attack across except by stealth attack, which would still be difficult. The Union fallback line relies on the fact that the highway is in a essential manmade trench, and while the sides are at a managable slope(still have to be careful going down of course), the area required to cross is much larger than any gully, allowing more time to pour ammo at the attackers.
And then this one, which is an overview of the entire front; http://i.imgur.com/O8EDE0H.jpg The dotted arrows are planned Union offensives, and I numbered them in order of occurance. The main idea is basically to go through the major gaps in the mountains to force Soria to fight in the Great Basin, which would favor the Union, forcing them to retreat from the Rockies to the Sierra mountains, which would essentially leave just a sliver of non-mountainous land across the west coast, letting the Union to move into "starve Soria into submission". And offensive number 1 is so secret that even the troops in Denver, whom many of the troops were skimmed from to prepare for the offensive didnt know they just knew they were going to "reinforce weaker, vulnerable sections of the border. And while it may seem like the Union is about to crack the line, I have an idea that will save Soria from the full impact of the offensives, just how will be hinted at in my next post)

Contrary to what they purposefully leaked to Soria, the troops of the Union were not about to collapse, in fact, they had become certain in their defenses and morale had never been higher. Also, even if Soria had used the special frequency, the comm units of the Union only received their own, secure frequencies(mainly to prevent soldiers from listening to music radio stations instead of orders), and any attempt to broadcast them directly over speakers would have only affected their own soldiers just as badly. By this point, the Union had developed defenses on par with the Soria defenses they faced, however this strong defenses were set back with several lines of weak, mainly automated defenses that would self-destruct if the enemy was detected as too close. That way, the Sorian troops would be drawn in into a weak sense of that the Union had withdrawn to more controllable grounds before they would suddenly slam into extremely entrenched positions.
In that week of preparation as well, the military had taken full control of the Union behind closed doors, with the tyrannical President McCaffard being rendered little more than a puppet to a hidden military junta, which was established after the military realized McCaffard could not lead the military as all his offensives would have failed if it wasnt for the superiority of Union commanders and troops in those general areas. And the show of force Texas made in destroying a quarter of the entire Confederate military in a single battle proved that to take Texas, simple human wave attacks would be disastrous. If they were to reunite the United States, they would have to first defeat Soria, then the New Confederacy, then they will have to attack Texas from its one, well, at least softer than the rest of the defenses, soft spot; its coast.

    *******

The now Sergeant Allen DeLan marched down the streets of Baton Rouge, the only city east of the Mississppi Texas captured in its rout of the Confederacy, however it was by complete design, just like the occupation of Alexandria on the other side of the Red River, it kept them a threat to the surrounding areas and allowed Texas to say "We could attack at any time". With New Orleans in Texan hands as well, the largest port of the New Confederacy and the life line to sustaining the western areas of its control with ease were gone. Now, only Mobile, Miami, Savannah, and Charleston were left as the ports of the Confederacy, all would be unable to handle the shifting of traffic from New Orleans to them. The full scale of the disaster of the Texarkana assault would only be realized in the coming months, meanwhile, Texas found itself in a position it like; it now controlled all river trade over the entire Mississippi watershed area, a sort of cork stopper of a bottle of extremely fine wine. The Ohio, Missouri, Tennesse, and other major river trade routes now would have no chance of sending goods out through New Orleans as the "free trade flow of non-military goods" agreement that had long been held by the New Confederacy and Union was now gone. The result; the food from the Great Plains that the Union wanted to ship out to other nations for money now had to cross the entire nation to ports like New York City in order to be sent out.
As DeLan thought through this and realized the bargaining chip Texas now had, one that would potentially destabilize the entire economy as they knew it for a period of time, he smiled and chuckled to himself at the thought as now, Texas had the full house hand; fright among their fellow US splinter nations from the massive Confederate defeat, and control of a highly, highly strategic port. What would the leaders of the Republic do with it remained to be seen...

It was about mid-day, and an eery silence fell amongst both fronts. Denver was completely quiet, enough to hear a pin drop. The Union and Sonia prepared to make something out of their respective lines, their futures were on the line. Whoever won today would decide the future of America. Sonia was ready to fight to the death for their independence, and they were going to ensure hell for the Union.

At 12:03pm, the Union made the first move. While nether side refused to move, the first shots were indeed Union that started slow before erupting violently. Soon, Denver turned into absolute chaos

    Meanwhile, in Little Rock, Arkansas

Five representatives from the Confederacy, the Union, and the Republic of Texas sat around a table with a single, one page document before them, it was not an alliancr or even a ceasefire or any sort of final peace deal. It was plain and simply, a document Texas was demanding signed or they would break their neutrality and attack to secure the demands detailed within. It read simply
The signee nations of this treaty hearby agree to these following conditions; in exchange for unhindered access to the Port of New Orleans and peace with the nation of Texas, the nations of the Union and New Confederacy agree to cede all territory east of the Rio Grande, south of the Missouri River, and west of the Mississippi to the Nation of the Republic of Texas
Texas also agrees to remain fully neutral in all affairs involving nations within the area of the former United States.

The representatives of Texas watched as the New Confederates slowly signed the document, having already pretty much lost those territories anyways and needed to withdraw to more defendable borders. Then all eyes went to the Union representatives.
"Why should we cede this much territory to you when you havent evem bested us in battle yet?" One asked
"Because, the states of Oklahoma and Kansas have already told us they would surrender to us should we attack. That would only leave four cities we need to capture to secure the area anyways. And we know you don't have the troops to fight both us and Soria.
"This means we'll have to abandon Denver, won't it?"
"That is correct. But cities immediately to the north such as Fort Collins will still be yours. Also, you won't have to hold the entire southern half of the current front, which would double your troops avaliable for going north."
The table remained silent for some time as the Union representatives realized the Texans were right, if Texas attacked, the troops in Colorado and New Mexico risked being attacked from the front and behind, not a good idea. Realizing simple, military logic would lead to Texan and Sorian victory, they relunctantly signed the treaty, knowing they would rather have the Texans hold Denver than Soria.

    *****

    Denver

Corporal Nelson was about to order a probing raid when a command suddenly came in over the comms and the artillery bombardment suddenly ended. Gritting his teeth as he realized what he was being asked to do, he ordered some troops to find a white tablecloth with the words, "Denver is Texan." Waving it in clear sight of the Sorian troops as a squad slowly and carefully approached the Sorian lines through the Union defenses, making it clear they were coming over in peace

General Alex Mayfield ordered the artillery to stop firing once the Union side went silent, not long before allowing a Union messenger to pass through Denver. Not long later, the Sonian troops lowered their weapons reluctantly. Low enough to show that they were in peace, but also within reach if things got violent.

The messengers looked at the Sorian troops that surrounded them, both sides looking at the other with almost curiosity, none of the soldiers had been so close to troops of the opposite without trying to kill each other or as POWs. "We just got an announcement, Denver now belongs to Texas along with all territories south of the Missouri, East of the Rio Grande, and west of the Mississippi belongs to Texas, and that if you were to attack, it would be an attack on the Republic of Texas."

General Mayfield looked at the messengers for a moment before cursing to himself silently. "We've been wanting to retake Denver, but it seems that this will now unfortunately never happen. And I know what Texan troopers could do to us on a bad day, and I'm not wasting innocent lives to make a point. Alright....congratulations, you win."

Mayfield held a finger to his ear as he spoke quietly, where the entire Sonian force seemingly got up and just left Denver quietly. They felt that they have been cheated out by Texas, but almost nobody complained as the soldiers began to pack up.

While the Soria troops began to pack up and leave, the Union troops were amassing just to the north in two places, Fort Collins and a large gap in the mountains. Once they were certian Soria thought everyone was gone, they attacked en mass, the troops going through the gap in the Mountains quickly punching through and surrounding those still in the mountains west of Denver, while also punching a resupply line to the troops that were west of the Rio Grande. Just because Denver was lost didn't mean the war was over, far from it, it was the beginning of its bloodiest, longest chapter as the president was overthrown pfficially by the military junta in the face of his "catastrophic decision to hand over Denver to a third party."

Lucas managed to survive the sneak attack by spiting away from the main force, using his jetpack to avoid any serious confrontations. He was hit in the shoulder by a stray bullet, but it was not enough to keep him down, the some Sorian troops remained behind to ensure the safety of the main force and by using the environment to their advantage, gave the Union hell until they were both on equal footing.

A day after the treaty, the first Texan troops marched into Denver, and immediately began setting up their own defenses and tearing down the old ones. They found themselves doing something they thought they had just finished a few weeks ago; building a defensive wall. They could hear the fighting that was occuring some miles away, but at this point, they didn't care

Lucas and the survivors made it in their military convoy to Grand Junction, near the border to Utah. Once news came from what had happened in Denver, the Sonian people were generally unhappy about what the results. Still, they held a sigh of relief knowing that it wasn't the Union that took the city. But the war was still going against the Union, who would now attack from the north unless they risk angering Texas. Defensive lines were now being set up into Wyoming and Montana, which were now within reach of the Union. But after what has happened, Lucas felt that nothing of great importance was going to happen for a while anyway.

Over the next month, Texas solified its hold of its new territories, however, the offensive by the Union made a thin band of Union territory down the entire border, a barrier in the way of any kind of land trade between Texas and Soria. Meanwhile, the Union and Confederacy also spent the time readjusting their deployments, solidifying the borders and front lines and just taking a breather

(I think we might need to make plenty of maps for this RP. Also going to add some filler.)

Other than preparing to defend itself, Soria had felt a strange peace that has not been felt since its establishment in the mid 2060's. During this time, morale had risen after a documentary named 'In the Valley of Giants' was broadcasted in Soria with a view count of over 8.9 million on it's premiere. While being a documentary about the war, it was also a propaganda movie inbetween with many A-list actors taking various important roles. Despite that the Union had a hold on Southern California, the movie seen a considerable rise of men and women enlisting and was a box-office hit.

Slowly, the military junta of the Union came under increasing fire from its citizens over the month. They were blaming it for deviating from the path of democracy and liberty during the Dark Days causing the split up of the once great America, an event that had so far left over a billion people dead worldwide, with a figure half that size displaced from the fighting that had raged across the world. The junta had ignored that the citizens wanted AMERICA restored, not just in land, but in body and spirit, to once again take its place as leader of the free world. However, the protests that were starting to break out came to face troops that were supposed to on their way to the front lines and put down, brutally. While there was not open rebellion quite yet, the pot was simmering. But despite this; the Union made sure that nothing was ever heard about the protests. No one had any idea about the revolution waiting to happen within the Union to restore the United States of America as it was meant to be.

Sonia, once a nation that emerged to combat against the increasingly authoritarian and despotic Union government, was one of the most powerful in the world. While relatively weak in comparison to what used to be a united Communist China, it was still quite a threat. All Sonia ever wanted was to maintain it's independence, ensure peace and prosperity and to never again fall to the Unions banner. It's early government were originally revolutionaries, and unwillingly, they were going to return to that role for an upcoming revolution in the Union.

Lucas decided to retire from his position as a Rocket-Jumper and instead, moved to Boston after receiving a tip from one of his commanding officers in the military. While he enjoyed the change of scenery, he would unwillingly become involved with the revolution that was change American history.

After 3 months of protests and violent crackdown, a single act suddenly ignited the powderkeg. During a meeting of the junta in the former home of American democracy, the Congressional Building, a large group of people sat themselves down in the shape of the formerly united US with a banner with the words "Freedom, Democracy, and Liberty" wrapping around them and in the ground they surrounded. Then, when the troops came to arrest them, they set themselves on fire, remaining completely still and silent as they burned to death or almost to it before being put out. The next day, massive protests broke out across the country, this time, the civilians brought weapons, but currently lacked heavy weaponry.

(It would have sent even more of a message if there happened to be exactly 50 protestors)

The protests quickly turned violent when the Union desperately cracked down onto the general public with brutal force, killing more protestors instead of protecting them. Thousands of law enforcement agency's, the high majority of them being the local police departments, were sickened by this act of corruption, brutality and even despotic enforcement of the people, and many of them left the department to join what was now quickly turning into a full-blown revolution, supplying any protestors with whatever weaponry they had. Even the lower levels of the military joined the protestors, using their combat knowledge to assist the civilians combat what used to be the Union. In one instance, the Eastern Distribution Center in Pennsylvania, was stormed by thousands of former soldiers, police officers and civilians with almost no fight and striped the armories clean in what was essentially the American Storming of the Bastille.

Boston was in absolute chaos, Lucas held a flag of the the Former United States in one hand as he used his jetpack to fly to the roof of the Boston city hall, where the Revolutionaries had set up as their headquarters after finding it abandoned and held the flag high above his head to the heavens. This not only made an everlasting image onto the popular movement, but it would become an iconic image of the Revolution.

On that same day in Washington.DC, the revolutionaries fought against the Union soldiers. With the numbers of the revolutionaries overwhelming the soldiers, where many of them refused to shoot innocents and instead disobeyed their commanders and joined the movement. Washington DC was still a hard fought battle however, with many thousands dead on either side, but the Union eventually surrendered as The Mall was soon flooded by hundreds of thousands of people By the end of the night, the revolutionaries burnt the White House to the ground to signify the beginning of a new era of American history, and the beginning of the end of the autocratic Union of President McCaffrey's America.

Sonia, on the other hand, experienced non-violent political protests instead of what was happening to the east. Calls for reuniting with America were generally ignored and it was likely that the nation would follow a very distinct path that Texas was taking. It wanted to maintain it's independence no matter what, even if the Union inevitably won the war. Despite morale being severely high, even with the Union at it's doorstep, the Sonian people felt concerned about what would have happened to the country within the next few months.

(Lets go with that. And also; I think that the nationalism caused by that movie would be fairly short-lived, maybe 6 months at most, and I'ld be willing to bet the more rural areas would want to rejoin the US if it became truly America once more, along with a large portion of the populace. Think about it, in their current state, they are relying almost entirely on Idaho for food, which would most certainly strain the soil and it would mostly be potatoes. Just a lot of basic problems that would likely push the populace more towards rejoining a peaceful US)

Within a couple weeks, the embattled military junta finally surrendered to the revolutionaries. They and large portions of the military command structure was then put on trial for a huge array of crimes, from war crimes to crimes against humanity to treason. Corporal Nelson was one, he was sentenced to death for ordering the murder of civilians and POWs and directly killing over 200 Sorian POWs. The junta was also all convicted of high treason, crimes against the state, ordering the violent suppression of peaceful protests, and many more charges. In the week that followed the junta's surrender, hundreds upon hundreds of high ranking officials were tried, their lives only spared if they convinced the jury and judge that they deeply regretted what they had done and only followed orders from above. It did not take long before the vestiges of the junta's regime were destroyed and all convicted were sent to the gallows. President McCaffery suffered the worst fate in the only deviation from "cruel and unusual punishment". Captured by a mob, he was beaten almost to death before being lifted up to the top of the Capitol Building, where he was left to die. A month of violence followed as order was reestablished slowly and eventually, the Union quieted to silence, the Terror now gone. A new Constitution was drafted, heavily resembling the previous one, but far more up to date with the times and far more clear on what was what. States were granted far more self governing power and additional safeguards were put in place to prevent abuses of power and to prevent the rich from buying elections, and the electoral college was left out of the new document.
Then, following a refurendum, it was approved overwhelmingly and the first true elections to occur in the Union since it formed were held, quickly followed by a referendum in the battered New Confederacy that reluctantly agreed to rejoin the Union, which renamed itself back to the United States of America. However, Texas remained defiantly independent, as the president put it, "We have made the mistake too many times to be part of the United States. This third time of independence shall be the final as we have no desire at all to rejoin a government that has always ended up betraying us."

While a sense of nationalism survived in the Republic, Sonia remained independent from the Union. It would eventually rejoin the Union, but it would not be until a day where Sonia felt it was right. Eventually, Sonia seen the benefits of uniting with the rest of the United States and peacefully broke apart some twenty years later. All of its northern territories returning to the US while some states joined with Texas. While Sonia as a nation was gone, it was still alive in spirit
